Book Description

A brand new novel by the best selling and award winning authors Steven Savile and David Sakmyster.

After a Near Death Experience (an 'NDE') radically transforms the life of
eccentric billionaire Nicholas Sheridan, he becomes obsessed with understanding the experience, recreating the conditions that opened the gate to the unknown.

After recruiting others with similar experiences, they discover amazing connections, common visions and dramatic abilities among people who have come back from the dead. But what they haven't bargained for is that the gate opens both ways. Something has escaped from death and is hunting them. Something hungry...

“With NDE, Sakmyster and Savile trek across a dark line into very strange country. Equal parts smart and chilling, this is a powerful and important novel.” –Jonathan Maberry, New York Times bestselling author of EXTINCTION MACHINE and FIRE & ASH

“A wild and gripping ride through the afterlife, virtual realities, real world horrors and everything in between, NDE reminded me of Neil Gaimain's American Gods wrung through The Matrix.” –Stel Pavlou, author of DECIPHER and GENE

We set out to write something fans of shows we enjoyed, things like Medium and Afterlife, and fused them with the raw energy of 24 and other thrillers, keeping the emphasis on the supernatural but very deliberately away from anything horrific. We released part one and part two as novellas a couple of years ago, then decided to wait until the series was complete to release it as a full novel instead of drip-feeding readers 80-100 pages at a time, so we're delighted to unleash THE LAZARUS INITIATIVE on the world. What this does mean is if you purchased the original novella, you can simply delete the file in your kindle and re-download this edition and you will receive the FULL NOVEL. That's our way of thanking everyone who supported us.

5.0 out of 5 stars An exciting read! June 17, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition
Every year many books receive positive and high reviews. Some because the authors have been writing for a long time and are well known, others because of the great content put into the story. N.D.E. falls into that second category. Savile and Sakmyster could be the next Preston and Child.
As I read through the first 6 or 7 chapters I found myself looking for a slow down so i could take a break. It did not happen!. This story starts out fast and does not slow down.
The Eschelon Corp., developer of virtual reality games, is owned and run by billionaire Nicholas Sheridan. While taing vacation time and flying his own plane to the Grand Cayman Islands, he develops engine problems and crashes. Instead of dying Sheridan find himself in a 'Near Death Experience'. He survives and starts to investigate the strange world of near death experiences and those who have had one. To accomplish this Sharidan brings together a group of these individuals to help him. The Lazarus Initiative Team leads you through a twisting adventure that includes a former Benedictine Monk who built the Thanobry Chapel in 1864, the second in command for the Eschelon Corp. who has his own agenda and an Army General with interest of developing soldiers who can return to life after dying and heal themselves from major injuries. The ending of N.D.E. twists and turns with a surprising development at the National N.D.E. Convention.
the story is action filled, intriguing and includes a list of strong characters. Once you start reading you will nnot want to put this one down! Very well written by two masters of suspense!

5.0 out of 5 stars An exciting new Story begins... November 23, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition
NDE is one of those stories that takes a regular thriller, throws in some crazy ideas and plots, gives it a good shake and tada! you have a brilliant read that pulls you right in, jostles you about, and shoves you out at the end wanting more.

When the eccentric CEO of a business empire survives a plane crash, one that was no accident, he awakens to the revelation of a Near Death Experience. Drawn to an old church, steeped in mystery and ancient power, he assembles a team of experts - all of whom have had their own NDEs - and sets out to find out what really happens when we almost die.

The Trickster, though, wants a larger role in the affairs of mortals, and through the unhinged Deputy of Sheridan and other unfortunates in his path, a darker scheme is set into motion. Sheridan and his Collective, while seeking to understand how NDEs manifest, must unravel the mysteries of Thanobry's tomb and counter the growing menace.

What starts as the scientific and philosophical pursuit of one of the biggest questions evolves into a terrifying race for survival against malevolent forces.
A combination of good old-fashioned thriller tension, sci-fi gaming technology, Native American mysticism and the clever detail that two skilled writers bring to the page; NDE is a real blockbuster of a novel. There's probably room for a sequel too, hint hint...

5.0 out of 5 stars Blew My Mind Like A Whirl in a Blender January 27, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition
What I really liked about this off-beat, fast-paced thriller, was that I never saw what was coming - totally unpredictable to me, which I love! Put these ingredients into a blender on "high"and see what magic the authors created: a billionaire with a strange NDE, The Navajo "Coyote" - Trickster deity, a strange old chapel, the finding that there are "peculiar" NDEs that link certain people together, alternate reality games, a strange "old man" that appears and disappears,a secret government interest, and the games created under the evil second-in-command at the Billionaire's company. Blew my mind! I even lost my way in this story, thinking I knew what was going to happen, but spun out like a car on black ice, and totally got disoriented and shocked.Having experienced an NDE or two myself, I'm so thankful mine was nothing like those denied in this story! Yes, I will be anxiously awaiting the next installment, I'm hooked. Thanks for the ride guys! 5 stars.

4.0 out of 5 stars renewal June 17, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition
Nicholas Sheridan runs a company that creates reality games. On a flight one day, he crashes and dies - but then he's alive and what he experienced while dead causes him to want to find out more and about others who have had similar experiences. What he finds out and what he finds out about what a colleague at his company is doing, leads him to much danger and possibly to a real death experience. So who are the good guys here and who the bad and who is the Gray Man?

5.0 out of 5 stars A gamer's delight of a plot. August 26, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Intelligence on a half-shell. I was totally caught up in The Lazarus Initiative and am waiting, somewhat impatiently, for a sequel because it just begs for one. I have this thing for intelligent characters who speak and demonstrate their intelligence. I am not a fan of "Everyman" in my reading material. Savile's hero is intelligent and we see it in every scene. Thank you, Steven.

5.0 out of 5 stars Exploding Micocosmic Particles July 14, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Sheridan walks away from a devastating plane crash. Angela drowned as a young girl under a hole in the ice. Nicolas Sheridan was different after the plane crash, "almost like he's been replaced." He built Echelon, began Project Lazarus, and began recruiting others like himself, those who knew intimately about NDE, Near Death Experience.
"Life is just a holographic simulation, an infinite loop." Bright light. Emerald glow. White room. Long tunnel. Very similar reported experience. Seeing old friends, relations, those gone before. Rejection. Expulsion. Short, abrupt trip back to reality. An abrupt personality change. Gruff to gentle. Criminal to law abiding citizen. Is this from fear of the unknown, the absolute, or suspected consequences of being cut off from a place indescribably serene and beautiful? "You don't know what it's like, coming back. To be unable to connect with your family, not to care about them anymore. I did not want to come back!"
Obsessed billionaire. Who is the man in the grey suit? Mystery upon mystery piling up, leaving more doubt and uncertainty.
Is it all a hideous game? Are we "just pieces on the board, objects of amusement, waiting to be knocked over?" Jonah reels from the after images. His NDE, wandering on a desolate landscape, being stalked by something. Are we doomed to become silhouettes only against the fading light?
The restoration of Thanobry Chapel held numerous surprises. Echelon, what was the connection? Examinations intensified. More experimentation. The journey each must take alone. Rattlesnakes. Coyote. Shifting shapes. The Trickster and the Pit.
Excellent. Enjoyed the read and the nudging questions.
