More About the Author

John Baldoni is an internationally recognized leadership consultant, coach, and author of more than dozen books that have been translated into 10 languages including Mandarin, Hungarian, Arabic, Indonesian, Japanese, Korean, Spanish and Vietnamese. John serves as chair of leadership development at N2Growth, a global leadership consultancy.

In 2015, Trust Across America named John to its list of top 100 most trusted business experts for the second consecutive year. In 2014, Inc.com named John to its list of top 50 experts for leadership and management and top 100 list of leadership speakers. And Global Gurus named John number 11 on its list of top thirty global leadership experts. John was first named to this prestigious list in 2007.

John has taught what it means to inspire at the top of a mountain in the Canadian Rockies. At sea level in Orlando, Florida, John spoke to nearly one thousand USAF/JAG commissioned and non-commissioned officers on leadership and communication. And his book, Lead Your Boss, was hailed by Harvard Business Review as a "guide that provides useful advice... [and] is encouraging and inspirational."

John began his business career in a fifteenth floor office with a view of a private golf course. Around the corner was a commanding view of the Pacific Ocean. In between was a recording studio where John produced and edited corporate radio spots worked with Fortune 500 executives in leadership communications and development. But John gave that all up to start his own business in the spare bedroom of a beachfront rental more than three decades ago.

In time, John established a career as a highly sought after communications and leadership consultant, where he had the privilege of working with senior leaders in virtually every industry from pharmaceutical to real estate, packaged goods to automobiles, and finance to health care.

John's newest book is MOXIE: The Secret of Bold and Gusty Leadership, which explores the grit and determination leaders need to exert to overcome challenges. Blending real-life stories with research and interviews, John provides a roadmap for how leaders can lead with greater awareness, more determined purpose and focused engagement in order to achieve inspired results.

His tenth book, Lead With Purpose: Giving Your Organization a Reason to Believe in Itself, solidified John's reputation for blending thought-provoking ideas with pragmatic advice. Over the past decade John has established himself as world authority on topics that matter to leaders who are seeking insight into leadership challenges of the day.

His 2012 book, The Leader's Pocket Guide: 101 Indispensable Tools, Tips and Techniques for Any Situation, has been recognized as a practical resource for those seeking to improve their leadership skills. His follow-up book, The Leader's Guide to Speaking with Presence, has provided insights that managers need to present their messages and themselves authentically.

Through his books and his over 500 columns for leading business publications including Forbes.com, Harvard Business Review, Inc. and many others, John has become a source of practical wisdom on topics such as influencing without authority, applying power appropriately, leading with grace and conviction, and developing genuine followership. All of these topics complement John's mission to help individuals and their organization achieve positive results.

John speaks widely to corporate, professional, military and university audiences. Those who attend John's keynotes and workshops find his advice to be practical and his advice inspirations. Mixed with stories of great men and women, and leavened with light-hearted humor, John seeks down-to-earth practical advice that individuals can apply immediately. John's presentations blend his passion for leadership with genuine enthusiasm for helping people achieve their leadership ambitions.

Format: Paperback
Many of John Baldoni's key points provided in this booklet were discussed in his previously published books, notably, Great Communication Secrets of Great Leaders (2003), 12 Steps to Power Presence: How to Assert Your Authority to Lead (2010), and Lead with Purpose: Giving Your Organization a Reason to Believe in Itself (2012). The unique appeal of this booklet is that his most valuable insights focus entirely on how those who aspire to become a leader can communicate effectively by projecting confidence, conviction, and authority.

Frankly, I view charisma the same way I view an expensive fragrance: It smells great but don't drink it. Charisma is often confused with presence. What Baldoni is talking about is a process by which to develop an appeal based on authentic character rather disingenuous charm.

The information, insight s, and counsels he provides achieve two separate but related objectives: They explain how to prepare a presentation, and, they explain how to deliver it effectively. He includes an "Action Steps" section at the conclusion of each of the twelve brief chapters [i.e. mental checklists], then a "Handbook On Communicating Leadership Presence."

Is this a definitive source? No, nor does Balboni make any such claim. Will this book help hucksters and charlatans sharpen their skills of persuasion? Probably, but this booklet was not written for them. Rather, for principled people who are willing to commit the time and effort to learning how to project confidence, conviction, and authority when seeking support to achieve worthy objectives. The cost of John Balboni's expert advice is only $6.26 when purchased from Amazon. That's not a bargain, that's a steal.

My review title says it all. This 63 content page book really worths its weight in gold. Very useful for business leaders of all ranks. Highly recommended!

p.s. Below please find some of my favorite passages for your reference.

What do people want most from leaders? The real deal!...Another word for this is authenticity. We want people in charge to be honest and we want their words to ring with integrity...something I like to call leadership presence. pg1

Power presence basic tips:
-When you meet someone for the first time, make eye contact. Give a firm handshake.
-If you are the host, be courteous. Offer coffer or refreshments.
-If you are a guest, compliment the host on his office.
-Smile when new people enter the room.
-Maintain an erect carriage when you walk and when you speak to people. pg55

When speaking as a leader:-
-Think about what you want to say and why. Itemize benefits and roadblocks. Consider how you will overcome the roadblocks.
-Develop your "elevator speech" for every single key issue.
-Present your ideas clearly and coheretly.
-Rehearse your talking points.
-Think of stories to augement your points.
-Ask people for their ideas.
-If you are the team leader, do not be the first one to voice an opinion. It will color all the others.
-Invite people to support your ideas.
-Project optimism.
-Radiate hope.
-Smile. It invites people to share their ideas with you. pg56

When listening as a leader:
-Look at people when they are speaking to you. Make eye contact.
-Ask open ended questions, such as "Tell me about..." or "Could you explain this?"
-Consider the "what if" questions: "What if we looked at the situation like this?"
-Leverage the "why" question: "Why do we do it this way?"
-Employ the "how" questions: "How can you do this?" pg62

The fear of looking bad in front of an audience makes public speaking the number one fear among the majority of people. When we think of public speaking we often think of the keynote speaker at a large, formal gathering. But public speaking can cover a variety of venues other than the formal stage. No matter the venue, if you are going to engage in public speaking, you need to get your message across - you need to be heard.

Very few people have the natural talent to stand up in front of an audience and deliver an effective talk. In addition to trying to deliver a coherent message, there are so many other things to think about that many people do a poor job. Giving an effective speech is a skill you can learn. But it will take practice.

John Baldoni, the author of The Leader's Guide to Speaking with Presence has written a very short, concise guide on how to deliver an effective speech. Mr. Baldoni wrote this guide with the executive in mind. It was not intended for the professional speaker.

In the book, Mr. Baldoni covers the important points a speaker needs to consider and focus on. There are 12 short chapters that cover the concepts of speaking with presence. At the end of each chapter are a few actions steps that you can implement to reinforce the concepts taught in that chapter. At the end of the book is a 5-step process, presented in bullet format that summarizes the key points covered in the book.

The 5-step process is a very valuable section. Here is the gist of the book covered in 9 pages. It is very easy to skim these points in a few minutes and refresh your memory about the important points of speaking with presence.
