Book Description

March 27, 2012
If you’ve ever dieted, you’ve undoubtedly worked very hard to achieve results--only to experience the disappointment of having the pounds creep back on. But now wellness expert Kathy Freston lets readers in on her secret: losing weight doesn’t have to be difficult, and it can last. With this book she shares the powerful concept of The Lean--a radically effective approach to positive change--with a practical 30-day plan to transform your health and jump-start weight loss in the most gentle, easy, and automatic way possible.

“Leaning in” is about setting an intention for what you want, weight- and health-wise, and then nudging yourself ever so gently in that direction, even if getting there seems impossible. It’s about choosing to eat foods that are delicious, filling, and supportive of your goals.

Each day of the scientifically based, vegan-friendly Lean plan, Kathy shows how to make and commit to small diet and lifestyle changes that, over time, yield unexpectedly significant results--something as simple as swapping in nondairy milk for cow’s milk, eating an apple a day, or having an afternoon power shake. These changes propel you almost effortlessly into a forward momentum of ever more healthy choices, and work together to bolster your progress. There are only two rules:

1. All you need is the willingness to take just one step.
2. As you add the healthier foods to your diet, eat the new foods first.

By gradually adding in these nutrient-dense and fiber-rich foods, you’ll crowd out the problem foods, feel fuller for longer, and simply stop feeling cravings. On Kathy’s Lean plan, readers can experience sustained, healthy, and permanent weight loss of 1-3 pounds per week--plus increased energy, improved digestion, clearer skin, and renewed purpose. Complete with exercises, recipes, and powerful testimonials, The Lean offers not only a truly leaner frame, but also the little push we all need to get on the path to lasting change.

5.0 out of 5 stars Love the Lean!!! March 20, 2012
Format:Hardcover
I am a big fan of Freston's from her previous books and didn't know she had a new book out. Caught her on Ellen and bought the book immediately. While I began eating "veganish" from her other books, her approach on this one for simple weight loss was what caught my eye. On Ellen, Kathy talked about just drinking water (something about losing 5 pounds more if you drink 8 glasses a day than those that don't) and eating an apple a day. Really do-able and easy steps that I can do. (and I'm one of those that have tried every fad diet and have never stuck with a program since they are so stict and hard to keep up.) I just got this book and I cannot put it down!!! It's so basic and so simple and so intuitive and the information seems common sense yet is done in such a non-judgmental and insightful way. It makes me feel not only that I can do this program, and stick to it, but that I won't judge my own self if I slip, as I can just "lean" into it.

The book is set up with 30 Days, adding a new step in each day, while continuing the previous days steps. Drink water, eat a hearty breakfast, an apple a dy, eat nuts, use flax seed, incorporate superfoods, cut down on oil...all basic things and all so acheivable. AND...the best part is...THERE ARE RECIPES in the book!!! 30 days worth to get you started and keep going on getting lean.

I highly, highly recommend this book for yourself or as a gift. Whether you are a meat eater or not, this book is a do-able weight loss plan that will make you feel encouraged rather than discouraged and sets you up for success rather than failure. I started the water chapter today and, whether it's mind over matter or what, I already feel better.

This is a MUST HAVE (especially before bikini season!) book!

5.0 out of 5 stars Small day-by-day changes to a healthier you April 21, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
The plan of this book is unique; rather than suggest you make a monstrous change in your life (and we all know that momentous change is hard to keep up), the author gives us a day by day plan to change just ONE thing towards healthier, leaner and better eating and habits. That's a lot more "digestible" than cleaning out your entire fridge, adopting a completely different food plan and then having to live with it.

A good friend of mine (who has a degree from the premier university for holistic health) prevailed on her (non-vegan) husband to try her way of life and as he adopted it (slowly) he did lose weight and improved many aspects of his health. Her approach was rather similar: don't do it ALL at once, try this ONE thing. Then...another. He lost a lot of weight. His overall health drastically improved. Something she couldn't get him to do suddenly, she persuaded him to do by degrees. And they are both happier for it. This book proposes a similar, gradual and gentle plan.

The chapters are arranged by day:

Day One: water. (Ok, how hard is that? Get a water bottle, fill it with filtered water, drink.)
Day Two: Eat a big breakfast, and yes, it can be carbs. Just get a lot of fiber. I was happy with this because I like porridge (steel cut oatmeal) and I like rice porridge. The author suggests eating these, even veggies for a big, hearty breakfast. So far, I am totally with this (I love breakfast.)
Day Three: Eat an Apple (woo. that was tough. NOT. I love apples. I love them sprinkled with cinnamon for dessert.)
Day Four: Clean out the cupboards. Now, we are getting personal here but still --get rid of cookies if you have them, puddings, mixes for desserts, things full of preservative. Out of house, out of mind. Today only, be mindful of what you eat; avoid things with preservatives and toxins. Just today...
Day Five: Add a handful of nuts (if you can eat nuts) Healthy snack, many benefits. I like almonds and brazils. In particular, almonds. I like them raw.
Day Six: Trade out dairy and animal fats for plant based: mayo, milk, butter, find a non-animal based substitute. (Harder.....but I found I like almond milk.)
Day Seven: Add flax (no problem, love it on oatmeal and in whole grain crackers)
Day Eight: "DEEP DIVE" meaning, learn to be in the moment, meditate for five minutes and eat mindfully to fill up consciously and not eat unconsciously and thus, unfulfilled.

Now, here is one week and a day and we've been coaxed into some healthy habits without a lot of trauma. The book continues to Day 30--an entire month and ends with the advice to not strive for perfection but again, to change bit by bit, and be MINDFUL.

While the advice in this book could be found anywhere and everywhere, the ORGANIZATION and PATHWAY of this book is, I think, unique. It's very natural. A slow change, with meaning, with changes that almost anyone could find acceptable. I myself need to adopt a healthier lifestyle and eating habit, and I think this book could be the easiest way I ever tried. I don't have the bandwidth to turn upside down my entire habits, but I certainly can do a day at a time. Brillant.

This book is so simple and the reason I like it so much. So easy to read...just take 15 minutes of your day to read the few pages for that day's "addition" to the program and then the hardest part...applying it!! As usual no matter how much you learn and how many good intentions you have there is only one YOU who can do the actual work.
We all know the importance of drinking water but I like how the author digs deeper into the why's of this fact and the many other interesting topics/food products she brings to the table. Some things are not new ideas to me but some were.Overall it's a very light-hearted, positive way to read about some things us "less-disciplined" folks would rather not take the time or energy to do. :-)
As I've mentioned, it's one thing to understand what is/is not good for you but another to actually do it...that being said I suggest going into this book with the mindframe to really be committed to following through. I can admit I struggle with this in general and found myself skipping around in this book, doing some of the things and not the others. I suppose that any positive change is better than none but I can say I do believe this book's guidance would lead to some great health benefits the more you can follow it's daily suggestions.
I'm not vegetarian at this point but certainly understand all the health, environmental, moral, etc. reasons to live such a lifestyle so was not at all offended by the authors notes affirming this. I think it's important for everyone to keep an open mind and it never hurts to try something to see if it fits you personally or not...I know from my own experience whenever I have gone on any variation of a low-sugar, low-dairy or no red meat diet I feel better, lighter, have better digestion, etc. so what's the harm in entertaining a vegan diet if only for a week or two just to try it?? I didn't get the impression the author was "sneaking in" this info or had a hidden agenda by any means.
