I am very impressed with the quality of the puzzle.
Pamela A McGraw
The pieces aren't too big or too small, and the pictures are colorful and captivating, and just "busy" enough to keep him engaged without being visually overwhelming.

I would definitely recommend this one to any puzzle loving child who lives in a small space.

I bought this puzzle set for my daughter shortly after she turned 2. She is still playing with it regularly at almost 3 and I don't see any end in sight. At 48 pieces, these puzzles provide a challenge for the child who has outgrown traditional chunky "toddler" puzzles but isn't quite dextrous enough to master the thinner cardboard puzzles made for grammar school age. She loves the composition of the illustrations, too. The animals are friendly-looking but not overly anthropomorphic. She will do the same puzzle over and over again. And when she tires of one puzzle there are three more to choose from. Love that they thought to do the color coding on the back of the pieces so you know at a glance which pieces go to which puzzles. The wood box they come in is of excellent construction. It has survived a trip to Hawaii and back in checked luggage and I have even caught her standing on it without the least damage. There are partitions inside the box for the four puzzles. Every once in a while a smallish splinter of wood will slough off one of the pieces. This happened more when the puzzles were new than it does now that they are well worn. To avoid this, help your child dismantle the puzzles gently the first few times you play with it as the splintering results from wrenching the pieces apart. Anyway, well worth the money.

The puzzle overall is great in concept, but fails miserably in actual construction and quality. There are actually 4 different puzzles each made up of 48 pieces: Creatures of the Past; Animals of the World; Creatures of the Sea; and Animal Friends. My kids loves to do puzzles, and we own several sets in wood. We got this as a gift, and unfortunately, after the first use, we're going to have to freecycle it. Here's why:

The puzzle pieces are made of layers of wood (about 5 thin layers) glued together with the picture glued on top. The problem is that in taking the puzzle apart, the wood on the bottom layer is so thin that it splinters on the edges. This happened to about 10 of the 48 pieces just in the Animals of the World puzzle. When we cleaned up the puzzle to put it away, I noticed there were lots and lots of wood splinters left on our carpet. I immediately sent my young kids out of the room and vacuumed up the splinters. I just thought it might have been residue from inside the box, but when I looked more closely, I saw that many of the edges of the puzzle pieces had splintered off, and there were lots of other splinters waiting to happen. The wood that the manufacturer used doesn't have any kind of coating to keep it together, so it breaks off at the edges very easily.

Luckily, no one got a splinter. I would rather a puzzle be made of cardboard, even though it's less durable, than to have this cheap type of wood that can break apart easily. The puzzle is beautiful, colorful, and interesting, but I was not at all happy with the low quality of the construction.

I have a preschooler who is a little rough sometimes with books and paper toys, so I thought that while we worked on him being more careful with things, we could try out these puzzles. He also has a bit of a problem with focus, so the size and intricacy of puzzles are factors. These are perfect. The pieces aren't too big or too small, and the pictures are colorful and captivating, and just "busy" enough to keep him engaged without being visually overwhelming. He was able to finish his first puzzle in about 30 minutes, and we had a great time. The four-puzzle set has a wooden box that holds all of the puzzles, and the lid is a frame for whatever puzzle you decide to put together. The pieces are color coded on the back so you don't get them mixed up, and are separated into their own compartment within the box. Since durability was one key factor for my purchase, these wooden puzzles are great. All in all, I'm very pleased with my purchase. I got the four-puzzle set and three single puzzles and we've had a lot of fun putting them together.

This is the third Learning Journey product that I have bought. I am very impressed with the quality of the puzzle. The artwork is bright and colorful, and has so many animals filling the spaces that one can look and find new things to talk about every time. The storage box for the four-pack gives the four year old in our family choices to assemble each time he takes it out
