OinkADoodleMoo: Alan St. Jean

The legend of OinkADoodleMoo is one that most adults and children never heard but need to hear. What happens when a pig named Oink, a chicken named Doodle and a Cow named Moo decide to take matters into their own hands and teach a bullying, hungry and big black grizzly bear a lesson he will never forget. Told in rhyming form and with illustrations that will captivate any young reader author Alan St. Jean tells the story to young readers. The pictures are colorful, very descriptive and the facial expressions of the characters tell the story even without the words so that nonreaders can understand the story just by looking at the pictures. An added bonus is the CD that parents can play in car on a short journey to the market or the store for young children to occupy themselves with a great book, cute rhyme and follow along with the pictures as the narrator relates the story on the CD. Illustrator Libby Carruth Krock really hits the five star mark with her realistic illustrations.

So, what happens when a huge, hungry grizzly decides to set his sites on poor Oink for a meal? How do you stop him before he decides to create a bacon omelet or sandwich? Just how ingenious are our three farm animals? The Chicken named Doodle is our narrator and its his voice we hear as he says its time to start the BAND when he sees the bear coming closer to Oink. Oink grabbed his banjo, Moo sat at the piano and our Chicken his harmonica as they all played a jig. Now, everyone knows or should know that music has a calming effect and should create a definite way to calm as they say the savage beast. At least they hoped so! But, Mr.

Charlene's Review:

The Legend of OinkADoodleMoo is a rhyming tale as told by Farmer Walter’s crazy chicken, Doodle. Doodle tells us the story of the day a fearsome grizzly comes to the farm looking fora meal. With Oink the Pig on Banjo, Doodle on the harmonica, and Moo the Cow at the piano, the barnyard tunes soon calm the wild beast.

Mr. St. Jean, originally in Business Administration, has found his niche in childrens’ fiction. The storyline is simple, entertaining, and yet polished just enough for adults to enjoy, as well. Libby Carruth Krock’s illustrations are beautifully done, with lots of detail and the animals are adorable. This is a visually appealing book for youngsters, and adults.

Accompanying the book is a CD that follows along with the story. My only criticism would be that the reading sounded too serious, where I expected a more animated voice. The song, itself, was a lot more fun to listen to. Kids will enjoy the book, and CD, regardless of my critique because it is just, simply put, a lot of fun.

Having read Alan St. Jean's children's and young adult books in the past, I already knew about his ability to build anticipating from one chapter and from one page to the next. This child's poem, really, featuring a pig, a chicken, and a cow, "OinkADoodleMoo," respectively, shares a great lesson and is a great learning tool for children in the four to eight year age range. Includes bonus audio CD, which younger readers can use to follow along and build their own reading skills in the meantime. Well conceived.
