Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

Edited by White, a physician and past president of the Gay and Lesbian Medical Association, and technical writer Martinez, this work will be welcomed by many lesbians, particularly those residing outside of larger urban areas. It would also be extremely useful for healthcare professionals. The book opens with documentation on how homophobia often prevents lesbians from obtaining adequate medical care and concludes with a hefty resource guide listing hot lines, organizations, Internet sites, newsletters, and books on a variety of health topics. These two sections are the book's strongest. The middle section consists of personal essays by lesbians on their experiences with the healthcare system. The topics covered range from reproductive issues to chronic disease, AIDS, and breast cancer; information on substance abuse is conspicuously missing. Though the writing is somewhat uneven, as with many anthologies, these stories could help women who are currently navigating the healthcare system themselves or on behalf of a partner, friend, or family member.
