Book Description

Sandra Mercer moves back to her childhood home hoping to seek refuge from a better divorce and to conceal a painful secret. She is shocked to find her youngest daughter, Carla, wearing the same letter sweater she wore when she was in high school--a gift from Carla's boy friend Kevin Dawson. The sweater originally belonged to Jack Dawson, Sandra's high school and college sweetheart. Sandra and Jack had planned to wed as soon as he'd completed his military service. But fate would have its own way for the two lovers and a "Dear John" letter from Sandra, delivered just weeks before Jack was to return home, ended the dream they both had shared. For thirty years their paths never crossed. Now in the autumn of their lives, Sandra discovers that Jack, a retired TV personality, has returned home to write a book. She must now decide if she wants to deal with a love that has never gone away and a regret that that has punished her for a lifetime or to run away again.

About the Author

Skip Crayton is a lifelong resident of New Bern, a small town in coastal North Carolina, located on the Neuse River, the widest river in America. An avid sailor, his love for the river is only exceeded by his passion for writing. Upon graduating from New Bern High School, Skip entered the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree. After graduating from college, he headed off for a short tour of duty in the United States Navy, where he learned to fly. With his military obligation complete, Skip joined his father in the family construction and land development business. He started writing seriously in nineteen ninety-one. Over the last seventeen years, Skip has written one journal, two novels, and two short stories. In nineteen ninety-eight, he was asked to write a column for The Trent Woods Times, a monthly published in his community. The success of that column led to a contract with his local newspaper, The Sun Journal, a daily with a circulation of more than twenty thousand. In 2005 those columns were compiled into Skip s first book, the very successful Remember When, now in its third printing. Skip is married to the love of his life Carol and they have one son, Sam. They also share their home with two dogs, Socker and Little Mutt, and two cats, Mister and Bob.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Story July 3, 2008
Format:Kindle Edition
I read this book in two days, and it was most enjoyable. It was wonderfully written, bringing both Eastern North Carolina and a romantic love story together. You will be delighted when you read it, though be prepared to not be able to put it down.

This is such a beautiful love story. But more than that, it gives hope--hope that even in the middle of personal trials, love heals.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Great Story March 9, 2009
Format:Kindle Edition
The Letter Sweater isn't just a love story. It's about life and healing and courage and vulnerability. The suspense keeps you on the edge of your seat and the romance makes you want to cheer for everyone who's ever had the audacity to utter the words, "I love you". Skip Crayton's writing draws you in and lets you feel a part of the story he's weaving.

5.0 out of 5 stars Heartfelt, touching love story with a unique twist February 19, 2009
Format:Perfect Paperback
Men who know how to write love stories are few and far between. In The Letter Sweater, Skip Crayton proves he belongs on that short list.

I'm not going to be a spoiler and reveal the unique twist Crayton adds to the plot. But if you prefer love stories about genuine feelings between well-drawn, true-to-life characters, over Danielle Steele-ish fantasies, you'll love this book.

Skip Crayton, you put together a wonderful work with The Letter Sweater. You described love in its rawest form and painted such an accurate picture of life in Eastern North Carolina. For anyone searching for a book about small town love surviving against all odds, I could not imagine a better read. Thank you, Skip, for taking us on the journey with Sandra and Jack!

4.0 out of 5 stars Really cute, clean romance May 6, 2010
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I'm not usually into this sort of book, but when I read the description of the book, I decided, what the heck? I got the book, started reading it, and after a slow start, I got into the book. I could picture the surroundings, picture the conversations, smell the ocean and feel the wind on my face. I thought it was a nice, clean, well written romance with a Christian undertone. I would recommend it to a friend.

1.0 out of 5 stars Sounds Promising But Doesn't Deliver December 17, 2010

"The Letter Sweater" has a pretty decent beginning - we find Sandra's daughter Carla wearing a letter sweater from her long-ago high school boyfriend, who went off to war in Vietnam. The story starts out slowly and gets even slower. The book jumps back and forth brokenly between story lines and the characters (despite being in their 40s-50s) are written with the speech patterns of teenagers (this gets REALLY irritating by the end). The sailboat race, which is a pretty large chunk of the book, focuses entirely too much on the technical aspects of sailboat racing instead of how the characters deal with the situation they're facing (except for some entirely out-in-left-field language on the part of Jack). The ending was extremely sloppy - it goes from one place to another without any kind of bridge in between. This book needs fewer story lines that are better developed. If you like predictable grown up fairy tales, this is the perfect book for you.

This isn't the worst book I've read and it was worth the $1.00 Kindle price, but I definitely won't read it again.
