While not being the most conventional orchestral score, the mastery of James Horner's abilities to carefully, intricately orchestrate a very minimal ensemble are on full display here.

Vadim Perelman's "The Life Before Her Eyes" is a beautiful and depressing film, never really moving to anything positive, except perhaps in some of the subtle ways the dialogue is spoken, and what is said. James Horner's score could be described as the same, in that it's very quiescent, tristifical and even morbidly haunting at times... but never short of gorgeous.

In its running time of around 54 minutes, you will hear mostly the piano, an odd guitar here and there, and synthesizers. James decided to play all the piano parts himself, which is something I've enjoyed in his most recent scores. It somehow brings you as a listener, closer to the composer. Also, the way he plays the piano, sounds vastly different to anyone I've ever heard play. I don't know, I think I just feel more 'heart'. Add this to the quiet ambience created by Ian Underwood on the synths and you have a perfect match for the film.

Highlights of the score include "Diana - A Future To Be...", "Becoming Close Friends", "Two Lives Slowly Converging" and the final 12 minute masterpiece of a cue; "Young Diana's Future - A Future That Could Have Been...", certainly on my list of greatest ever James Horner cues. Certainly his piano playing in this cue is breathtaking.

This score will not please everybody in the same way the film will not. It isn't 'happy' and it isn't bombastic. It's intricate, intelligent film scoring and while this may not be as memorable as the great works James has composed in the past... it certainly is excellent. If you ever wanted to know what a Ph.
