Editorial Reviews

G&D is a galacti-fonk supergroup comprised of Georgia Anne Muldrow (handling all beatified soundscapes and vocals) and Dudley Perkins a.k.a. Declaime (handling creative direction and vocals/rap verse). While both have extensive discographies in their own right, The Lighthouse is their second official team effort that features clever handiwork by DJ Romes (of the legendary Lootpack crew), and guest vocals from LMNO and Miki Vale. These two are a singular healing force with a sociopolitical voice and vibe that acknowledges the past and embodies the future of music simultaneously.

Format: Audio CD
Not to take the ancient Chinese curse/sometimes cliche from the title of this review too seriously,Georgia Anne Muldrow and her husband-rapper/MC Dudley Perkins are collectively known as G&D-a side of George Anne Muldrow-herself a relatively recent addition to my musical fiend of interest, that I haven't paid sufficient attention to. She is of course from a relatively high,if not incredibly well known as the daughter of little known jazz guitarist Ronald Muldrow, musical pedigree. Dudley on the other hand is a very interesting. Associated at one point with jazz-funk loving hip-hop producer Madlid,he and Georgia since went on to found SomeOthaShip Connect-their own personal record label through which they release a steady stream of separate and collaborative projects. This results in a sense of musical romanticism that is based in genuine love of humanity as opposed to something coming from a mere physical connection. And this fusion of Muldrows' multi instrumentalist sensibility and Dudley's hip-hop experience makes for something very engaging on this album

Musically this album is not composed of a series of stand alone songs that are linked together conceptually. Rather it is structured like a hip-hop album in the sense that it is much like one long flowing mix-tape of scratching, samples, bass lines, rapping and vocals that completely blurs whatever lines that might still exist between soul, jazz, funk and hip-hop. The mix is not only ferociously funky on the highest level-with the eyes never taken off of the rhythm and bass line but the melodic and chordal progressions are somehow extremely structured compared to the rather loose mix of Dudley raps and Georgia's uniquely jazzy and expressive singing. Only three songs really stand alone on this to me taken out of the broader context.
