Book Description

Ashley Barrett doesn’t want to get married. At least, not anytime soon. She doesn’t care how many of her friends and family members and fellow churchgoers had weddings before they finished college—the last thing she needs in her fun-loving twenties is the dead-weight of some guy. And that’s why she created The List. By the time she completes all twenty-five goals—from learning a language to skydiving to perfecting the art of making sushi—she’ll be more ready to settle down. Maybe.

This summer in California is a prime time for Ashley to cross two items off the list: learn to surf (#13) and have a summer romance (#17). And Matt Gibson, the best surf instructor in Huntington Beach and the most wanted guy in the singles ward, is the perfect man for the job. Ashley hatches a plan to love him and leave him before heading off to grad school in the fall (#4, get a master’s degree). But when Matt decides he doesn’t like the "leaving" part, Ashley’s carefully laid plans are turned sideways. Now Ashley faces an unexpected dilemma: should she stick to the safety of The List, or risk everything for a love that may tie her down—or might set her free?

4.0 out of 5 stars A great "dessert" book April 7, 2011
By Jenny P
Format:Kindle Edition
I read "The List" in just a couple of days and was thoroughly entertained the entire time. This book is a light read - a romantic comedy that won't change your life or alter your perspective. It's like dessert - not necessary, but so much fun. The quality of writing is also really great - natural dialog, good pacing. I fell quite naturally into the story and found the author's style easy, refreshing, and fun. If you need a book to lighten the mood, this would be a great pick.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fun and Enjoyable Read March 22, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition
When I got this book I was warned it wasn't "deep". That was fine with me, I wasn't up for a giant, deep thinking book.

I thought it would be perfect to save for my upcoming cruise. I tried to read the first chapter to just get a taste. Well, I couldn't put it down, so I guess I need to find a new book for my cruise. :)

I really loved the main character and her determination. I wanted to cheer her on. "You go girl, you finish your list before getting tied down by marriage and the kids which are the real ones that tie you down!" But at the same time I was yelling at her to just be open to love, that it matters more than a stupid list.

I also enjoyed Melanie's writing. Upbeat, light and fun.

When she referred to Guacamole as "squishy, green goodness" I had to smile and then go eat some.

This is a perfect book for a cruise. I wish I had another of Melanie's Books to read. Apparently being at home is a great place to read it too.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful read....get it!!!!!!! April 7, 2011

Format:Kindle Edition
OK, I think this book was fantabulous! Light, funny and fun! I found myself laughing out loud at many of the main gals comments! Perfect read for the beach but, if you are not close to the beach, a nice cozy fireplace will do to!
I can not wait to read more by Melanie Jacobson

5.0 out of 5 stars Better than the premise promises March 28, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
The first scenario was a turn-off with the cute surfer being described at a church activity. However, the writing and the story both done well enough that I didn't put the book down until I was done. I would recommend this to anyone looking for a clean romance. The humor through out is wonderful, sometimes laugh-out-loud funny, and there is enough depth when you understand the main character's background a little better. It would appear at first glance that the lesson is get everything done you want before marriage, but thanks to an important discussion with her sister, the take-away lesson is that there is no one right way for people to reach their happy ending.

5.0 out of 5 stars Such a fun read! December 5, 2012

This is the first Melanie Jacobsen book I have read and quickly became a fan. She has become quite accomplished at the comedy/romance genre. I love her slightly less than perfect characters and the very humorous and witty dialogue exchanges. Oh, and then there is the romance part too! My family is getting tired of hearing me chuckle the entire time I am reading and then sharing the best moments with them. I read this in one sitting. If you like this book you will also love "Twitterpated" and "Not My Type". I can't wait to read her next one called "Smart Move". Thanks for all the smiles, Melanie.

5.0 out of 5 stars Romantic Comedy at its Best March 10, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
This book is awesome! I loved the main character's voice. Ashley had me laughing so hard at times. I swear I had this goofy grin on my face while I was reading this book--superbly written romantic comedy with some great kissing!

5.0 out of 5 stars Fun Summer Read! June 2, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
The book includes a lot of amusing banter between Ashley and Matt. It is fun to read about Ashley's adventures as she goes through the activities on The List. She made the list as a way of putting off marriage, because she views her sisters' experiences as negative. So she won't let any guys get too close for fear of entanglements. Matt goes along with her wishes and keeps it light. It is fun to read as they joke back and forth. Then in the latter part of the story there is a turn toward greater depth of emotion as Matt tries to talk Ashley out of her fear of marriage. I truly enjoyed this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another Melanie win March 14, 2013
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
Audience: Adult
Genre: Contemporary Romance, LDS Romance, Romantic Comedy
Length: 289 pages
Rating: ***** (Loved it)
Pros: More fabulous swoon. LOVED the hero, Matt ... that's something I adore about Melanie's heroes: they don't run away from love. This is the perfect warm-you-up-summer-romance for the middle of winter. I wanted to go sit on the beach with my husband and kiss by the time I finished this. And like usual, Melanie's books have more than just the romance going on -- considering the hero is sort of off-stage for a big chunk of the middle, one would hope so! Ashley, the main character, definitely has some issues (some that I didn't understand, but everyone is different!)
One of my romance pet peeves -- I have way too many, I know -- is a too old voice for late-twenties and thirty-something protagonists. I hate to admit this, but I'm thirty and I don't talk like a middle-aged woman. I say awesome and whatever and bummer on a frequent basis. So, ramble aside, Melanie GETS THAT and her protagonists speak age appropriately. The voice is FANTASTIC.
He Said/She Said: "We need to do this again sometime," he said.
"Kiss? Sure."
"Wow, Ashley, I meant eat pizza and take a walk, but I'll make out with you if you really want me to."
Matt: "Last one in has a really big crush on the other!" I scooped my board up and headed out at a dead run, splashing in until the waves were waist high before I turned around to grin at him.
He waded up slowly, his dimples flashing again. "Guilty," he said. "So very, very guilty."
Disclaimer: Nothing.
