Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Lena Tabori, publisher of Welcome Enterprises, follows up on her earlier success with The Little Big Book for Moms as she reaches out to the older generation in The Little Big Book for Grandmothers, ed. by Tabori with Alice Wong. The weighty volume contains an impressive array of poetry (from Vachel Lindsay to Shel Silverstein), fairy tales, activities and recipes alongside period illustrations by a variety of artists.

More About the Author

LENA TABORI is the founder of Welcome Enterprises and is currently Welcome's CEO and the Publisher of Welcome Books, the imprint under which the company publishes illustrated books.

She began her career in 1967 at Harry N. Abrams, leaving there is 1980 as their first female vice president (VP, Marketing and Special Sales). It was also the place she began her own editorial book development. At Abrams, she developed and edited MASAAI, by photographer Carol Beckwith, as well as putting together the NORMAN ROCKWELL'S CHRISTMAS BOOK. She also created a gift line called Abrams Artpapers and was responsible for organizing the hugely successful licensing program for GNOMES, a book which sold close to two million copies.

She left to create Welcome Enterprises as well as to co-found Stewart, Tabori & Chang, the illustrated book publisher (where she only remained until 1982). From 1982 to 1990, she largely devoted herself to creating books at Welcome and selling them to publishers, including Judith Levy's best-selling GRANDMOTHER REMEMBERS (Stewart, Tabori & Chang); the award-winning GLORIOUS AMERICAN FOOD by Christopher Idone (Random House); and LOVE: A CELEBRATION IN ART AND LITERATURE, which she co-edited with Jane Lahr (STC). She also produced for television an animated special for ABC television, Ziggy's Gift, based on the Tom Wilson cartoon character and directed by Richard Williams. For her role as producer and executive producer of Ziggy's Gift, she was awarded an Emmy in 1983.

In 1987, Welcome began packaging books for Turner Broadcasting and she was closely involved in the development of their publishing division, for which she negotiated a distribution deal with Andrews McMeel in 1989. For Turner, she personally conceived edited and produced Kisses and MGM: When the Lion Roars which was written by Peter Hay.

In 1991, Lena moved to San Francisco to become president and publisher of CollinsPublishersSanFrancisco. During the year and a half she spent there, Lena created fifty new titles, including A DAY IN THE LIFE OF HOLLYWOOD. In 1993, she returned to Stewart, Tabori & Chang as their president and publisher. During the next four years, she published more than 200 new titles; created a gift line of calendars, journals, and albums; and more than doubled STC's revenues, making it once again one of the most significant illustrated book publishers in the United States.

In 1997, Lena returned to Welcome full-time and she and her partner Clark Wakabayashi made Welcome Books their official publishing imprint. In 2005, she arranged for Welcome Books to be distributed by Random House. She also co-created the first two titles in the successful LITTLE BIG BOOK series: THE LITTLE BIG BOOK OF CHRISTMAS (with Alice Wong) and THE LITTLE BIG BOOK OF LOVE (with Natasha Fried), which were both published by William Morrow. Since then, Lena has been the co-editor of many of the subsequent LITTLE BIG BOOKS, including MOMS and DADS, all published by Welcome Books. There are now a total of 27, only a few of which are out of print.

A native of Sweden, Lena lives in East Hampton and New York with Frank Rehor. She has two daughters, Natasha and Katrina, both of whom left television careers to become partners at Welcome Books.

I got this book for a new grandmother and she **loved** it. It was the hit of the party. It's full of wonderful illustrations, stories, poems, recipes, and songs.
This is one of those books that is a classic great gift. This book is just crammed with great stuff, and would take weeks for a grandma to go through and pick out her favorites. I can't believe the amount of care and love that they editors put in gathering the contents and putting them together. I wish they would put out a "Little Big Book for Young Women Finding Their Way" so I could have one, too!
I've given "The Little Big Book" as gifts before, and everyone raves about them. If you are looking for a really special gift, or want to treat yourself to something that you will pass on to your children, this little book is the way to go.

This is a great book - for grandparents it is somewhat nostalgic.

The artwork is great and it is helpful if you want to remember those old songs you used to sing to your kids. It even has recipes for the little ones. I'm sold on it.

I received this book as a gift and love it. There are activities for babies, nursery rhymes, short stories, songs, recipes, poetry and wonderful art work. Not only do I use it with my grandsons but I visit a woman with special needs every week and we sing songs, read stories and poetry from the book and we love to look at the pictures.

There is a lot of love in this book and am now giving it to other grandmothers so they can share it with their new ones. It is delightful!

I gave this book to a friend who is a first time grandmother. It is a unique and different gift that she and her grandson will enjoy for years to come. She was excited about the songs and stories included in the book that she remembered as a child and can now share with her new family member.

I really wish there were some children of color in the book. It's a wonderful book, but when our children don't see anyone who looks like them it creates confusion and an inferiority complex. I will still use the book because there are no alternatives

I gave 2 books as gifts, one to a first-time grandma and the other to a grandma many times over. Both were in awe of the beautiful stories and gorgeous illustrations. (I'm now ordering one for myself!)

I also ordered The Little Big Book of Christmas. It is another gem!

This is a book I will take with me whenever I visit our grandson. It has everything! I can read to him, do activities with him, cook with him, and as a result of this book, I'm sure he will look forward to our visits. Thanks you, Lena Tabori and Alice Wong, for putting this book together.

After buying the Little Big Book for Moms for my daughter in law, I discovered the Grandmothers version. I treated myself and I just love it. I've tried several of the recipes- home made bread and honey glazed chicken wings to name two. They were delicious! There are also bunches of crafts, nursery stories, some with Grandmother theme, songs and games. I have a seven month old as well as 18 year old granddaughters. There are good things to share with both.
