Review

"If you are an Enterprise Guide user at any level, this book is essential. It is written in plain English, easy-to-follow, and well illustrated. The Little SAS Book for Enterprise Guide 4.2 is thorough, with well-explained examples that give the user the ability to utilize the software efficiently. As with all of the "Little SAS Books" authored by Susan Slaughter and Lora Delwiche, the care and attention given to the creation of the indexes stands above other technical books, making its effectiveness quite appreciated by the reader. If someone asks me an Enterprise Guide question, this is the resource I will point them to!"

Jenine Milum

"Overall, the book is a very detailed and comprehensive resource to help anyone who wants to use SAS Enterprise Guide."

About the Author

Susan J. Slaughter and Lora D. Delwiche have been using SAS since 1983. Susan got her start in graduate school and has used SAS in a variety of business and academic settings. Lora learned SAS on the job and has enjoyed helping others learn SAS ever since. In 1992, Susan and Lora teamed up to write The Little SAS Book: A Primer, now in its fourth edition, which quickly became a popular item on SAS users' bookshelves. Building on their successful partnership, they have now written this book for users of SAS Enterprise Guide. As frequent presenters at local, regional, and international SAS user group meetings, their interactions with other SAS users have inspired them to write books that are both informative and enjoyable to use. Susan currently works as a consultant through her company, Avocet Solutions, while Lora works in research at the University of California, Davis

More About the Author

I am best known as half of the team that writes "The Little SAS Book" series. I learned SAS in graduate school, and quickly discovered that data analysis is fun! So after I completed my degree, I bluffed my way into a job as a SAS programmer, and--as they say--never looked back. At every job I had, I found myself answering my colleagues' questions about SAS programming. I saw the problems people ran into, and where they got stuck. Before long I had started an in-house SAS users' group and begun teaching SAS classes. So when Lora Delwiche asked if I would like to write a book on SAS programming with her, I already had a lot of ideas about what the book should be like. The First Edition of "The Little SAS Book" was published in 1995. Since then a lot of people have told me that "The Little SAS Book" made it possible for them to get their first job. As far as I'm concerned, that's the highest compliment an author can receive. But we've gotten some compliments of the more standard variety too:

"The Little SAS Book: A Primer, Fourth Edition" received the Award of Excellence from the Society for Technical Publications International Technical Publications Competition 2008-2009.

"The Little SAS Book for Enterprise Guide 4.1" received the Award of Excellence from the Society for Technical Publications Carolina Technical Publications Competition 2006-2007.

This book gives nice screen shots, and easy to follow text which walk you through using the user-friendly version of SAS and then it gives easy to digest short well indexed instruction on important topics. As you can see from the index it covers the basics from importing data, doing descriptive statistics and generating basic reports. The sections covering data manipulation and joining together tables of data are very nicely done and will be extremely helpful to people learning how to do research and analysis on real (dirty) or complex data. Because there is not much here on statistics you will probably want to pick up Basic Statistics Using SAS Enterprise Guide: A Primer. Unlike the last release of this book, this version goes beyond the online tutorial and sets the stage for more in depth books like SAS Programming for Enterprise Guide Users. This is definitely the first book to get if you want to learn how to use SAS Enterprise Guide but budget money for the more advanced books I mentioned if you plan on using EG full time in school or at work.

Lora Delwiche and Susan Slaughter have once again demonstrated their keen ability to make learning about one of SAS' core tools--the Enterprise Guide--easy and straightforward.

Building on their success with the seven previous titles in their "Little SAS Book..." series, their latest offering shows how to apply the EG's newest release (4.2) to solve data management, reporting, and analysis tasks. There have been many important changes to the Enterprise Guide between Version 4.1 and 4.2, so if 4.2 is what you have on your desktop, you need this book, too, rather than editions written for previous releases.

This text makes the EG's power accessible to people who are new to using this point-and-click overlay to SAS' powerful capabilities and also explains to experienced SAS programmers/users how to apply EG features in their work.

As with all of their books, the step-by-step examples in this text are clear, organized, well-documented, and easy to understand.

"The Little SAS Book for Enterprise Guide 4.2" is an indispensable resource for everyone who uses this SAS Software tool.

What I like most about this book is that I can easily find what I am searching for. When I find it, I can understand it and the information is useful. What more can you ask for?

Unfortunately, there is no way to separate the review for the contents of the book from the format of the book. As a result, I have to give 3 starts to this book.

I liked the way this book was organized. It started with brief tutorials that helped you get a feel for the how SAS Enterprise Guide works and then it has a reference section where you get more in-depth details of the product. This book is definitely recommended if you are starting to learn SAS Enterprise Guide. Even though it indicates version 4.2, I have not found it a problem when I am using version 5.1 of the product. I am assuming that there are some newer features which this book probably does not cover.

My biggest gripe is with the kindle format of this book. I have purchased other technical books in kindle format and have noticed that there are sometimes problems in the way the books are formatted with screenshots and associated text not lining up properly. However, with this book, its a much bigger issue. The fonts are all over the place. The pages dont flow smoothly. There are numerous instances of the top half of the letters appearing on one page and the bottom half of the letters appearing on the next page. You then have to piece together what the line probably indicates. There are some random text that appear in the book too. eg: location 2413 has some random text formatting information which I presume is the internal kindle information appearing in the book.

I would recommend sticking to the print edition of this book.

I own the little SAS book by the same author(s) and the enterprise guide is way better structured.

I was hesitating to buy it at first because of the experience with the little SAS book, but when I received this one, I was very happy to own it.

It is easy to follow and there are practice data sets available online.

Definitely a good reference book.

I hope they will issue one describing advanced statistical procedures using SAS in future.

Recommended.

I was mainframe SAS programmer quite a few years ago and recently got a project to convert mainframe programs to web in SAS Enterprise Guide. This book helped me to transition from mainframe to web SAS in a very short time. Before encountering this book, I tried other Little SAS books, but this was by far easier to learn as it is specific to Enterprise Guide.
