Editorial Reviews

“I think I can, I think I can…” The timeless story comes to life in this all-new, feature-length film filled with fun and adventure! When Little Engine (Alyson Stoner, Cheaper by the Dozen) must leave Dreamland to deliver toys into the real world, she sets her fears aside and learns that with a little determination and courage, anything is possible. Featuring an all-star cast, including Whoopi Goldberg (The View), Jamie Lee Curtis (Freaky Friday), Corbin Bleu (High School Musical) and Brenda Song (The Suite Life of Zack and Cody), this “fun family film” (Francine Brokaw, Los Angeles Family Magazine) is one you’ll enjoy again and again.

2.0 out of 5 stars A Nice Book into a Scary Movie... April 1, 2011
This is my 3.5 year old's favorite book in the whole world. He has even memorized portions of it. When I saw there was a new movie coming out, I grabbed it as soon as I could. He was ecstatic. At first he was curious about the story and the personified engines and water-tower. It was all going well until the scary "bad dream" engine came along. Before I knew it, my son was completely in tears and was so afraid of what was going to happen to the sweet little blue engine and the little boy. I get the fact that if you're going to create a full-length movie from a fairly brief children's story that it has to have some plot to it. My problem with this movie is that this book is favored by YOUNG children who are oftentimes easily scared and while most of this movie is fairly sweet and innocent, just that one part with the big, scary, mean train was enough to poison my son's whole experience. If you have an older child who likes trains or a younger child who is not quite so sensitive, this is probably a great movie, but if your child is at all sensitive, DO NOT buy this film. Positives: beautifully animated, bright colors, cheerful voice-overs.

5.0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable for young and old - love the voices! March 27, 2011
My 2.5 yr old son who is addicted to trains loves this movie. There is a scary bad guy that I think is bothering him, but overall it's a good movie for kids that are into trains. My favorite character is the caboose voiced by the guy from "Rules of Engagement". He's hilarious!! Jamie Lee Curtis was a good fit for the clown and Whoopi is good as the tower too. I don't know the younger voices, but it appears they are all rather famous too. Would have been better if some of the trains has names instead of just being called "Freight Train" etc. Like Rusty had a name...but oh well. Nice to see some of the proceeds go to a good cause. And of course, it's a great message for kids. Gotta wonder about the "mushroom forest" though, what was going on when the writers put that in hmmm?? Anyway, overall a good family flick!!

1.0 out of 5 stars This Movie is too scary for young children October 2, 2012
Format:DVD|Verified Purchase
I agree with the other reviewers that wrote that this movie is too scary for young children. My 4 year old son cried hysterically when I put him to bed last night because he was afraid of the "Nightmare Train". Even this morning he said he was still thinking about the Nightmare Train and feeling scared. We hadn't seen the movie in two days at this point too, so it clearly made an impression. It's unfortunate because he had seen a preview for the movie and was asking me to rent it. So I thought he would be thrilled to watch it but no. Never again.

1.0 out of 5 stars Ugh...I wish I'd read the reviews September 25, 2012
I really wish I hadn't let my kids watch this movie. My 3-yr-old has never cried like that at a movie and my 6-year-old keeps talking about the "night train" and how scared he is now and that we need to tell the people at the library about this so they know this scary thing is in their movie. Most kids who are interested in seeing this movie will be Thomas Tank-engine aged which is pretty darn young. Kids at this age still can't distinguish well enough between fantasy and reality, so I don't believe it's a good idea to show them such frightening images.

- Wonderful animation, great textures
- Beautiful colorful landscapes
- A kinetic and interesting dream world
- A sweet and slightly cheesy children's story for the first 3/4 of the movie
- Interesting and exciting action sequences
- Good vs bad, good wins
- Bully vs victim, victim fights back (verbally) and wins
- Interesting characters and good voice acting

- They overdid it when making the nightmare train. He's freaky and scary. My 3 year old watches the movie and at first was a little anxious but seems fine now. He has a creepy scary appearance, voice, and actions.

I'd love it if the bad guy was bad rather than creepy and evil, but I can't really say it's a problem because my son loves this movie.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great movie for you and your kids! March 22, 2011

We had the chance to see this movie in the theater before it came out on DVD (it had a limited theatrical run the month before it was released). We weren't sure what to expect, but I have to say that we loved it! The movie is bright, colorful and FUN! The animation is surprisingly good, and the voice acting top-notch. Usually, movies for younger kids can drag, but this one moved along at a perfect pace, keeping all the kids in the audience enthralled. And I was pleasantly surprised at how FUNNY it was, keeping the adults entertained, too. The filmmakers really did a nice job of making sure all ages can enjoy this.

I also love the fact that this movie was done in conjunction with the Starlight Children's Foundation. Part of the proceeds from the ticket sales went to benefit that charity... and 50 cents from the sale of every DVD also go to help them. So not only are you purchasing a great movie, but you're also helping a good cause. And the theme of this movie is not only perfect for the children who benefit from the Starlight Foundation, but for kids everywhere: "I think I can!"

All in all, if you have young kids, or are a kid-at-heart, this is a must buy! It's a beautifully made, POSITIVE movie with a great message and entertaining characters. I hope they make toys to go along with this!! :)
