Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

As he did in The Three Bears , Barton here skillfully pares down a well-known tale for the youngest readers and listeners. Vibrant hues abound in his full-page, collage-like illustrations, which show the industrious little red hen and her three cooperative chicks planting seeds; harvesting, threshing and grinding wheat; and baking bread--while a carefree pig, duck and cat cavort merrily, repeatedly refusing to lend a hand. Of course, their one and only offer to help is turned down, and as the three hapless animals peer through the hen's kitchen window, she serves the warm loaf to her open-mouthed offspring. Creatively balancing simple sentences and vivid images, Barton wraps up this wise mother's timeless message into a neat package. Ages 3-6.

From School Library Journal

PreSchool-- Barton just gets better and better. Bright, primitive illustrations tell the favorite old story with striking simplicity; the red and yellow of the hen and her three chicks stand out against the intense colors of the backgrounds. Double-page spreads in bright green show the lazy friends boating, playing on swings, flying a kite, and sleeping, while the hen performs her chores on a series of rainbow-colored pages. The text has been effectively pared down to its bare essentials, and would be excellent to use in toddler story times. Of course, the tale is available in many versions, perhaps the best being those by Paul Galdone (Clarion, 1979) and Margot Zemach (Farrar, 1983), but there is definitely room for this one on the shelf.

This book has been a favorite for the last several months. My son liked the repetition and the bright pictures from the start, and as he gets older (he's now 21 months) he also enjoys naming the animals and what they are doing. There is lots in the pictures for a toddler to talk about: planting seeds, cooking, kite flying, napping, and so on. I'm not wild about the artwork in this book, but then again I'm not its target audience--the simplicity seems to work great for young kids.

My 17-month old daughter has loved this book for months already. It has a rhythmic text and lively pictures, plus it is about animals, which is always a hit with the toddler set.

This is a fabulous edition of the Little Red Hen. The text is crisp and clear, the pictures are simple, clear, and bright, and the board book format is friendly to little hands! My boys ADORE this book. It makes for a great bedtime story, too!

Sturdy pages, brights colors, and great story idea. More pages than an average board book, which is nice. I'm glad I bought this for my daughter.

I bought this book for my youngest granddaughter who has a love of books that I have never seen and I thought my children liked books. I bought this one for her because it is a book that is really cute and also teaches the message to HELP OUT if you want to benefit in the end results. She will love it and the bright kid friendly drawings.

I love the illustrations in Byron Barton books especially with the classics The Little Red Hen and The Three Bears. Working with preschool student with special needs these books are repetitive and predictable and have very clear cut basic illustrations using primary colors. It's a must have for any preschool library.

There is something about the rhythm of Burton's writing that is both engaging and relaxing at the same time -- for parent and child alike. While Trucks and Planes trumps this book as a favorite of my 2.5 year old boy, it is a charming farm tale and one that he, his sister and I have enjoyed repeatedly.
