Editorial Reviews

Review

We've had well over a hundred sponsoring authors at Kindle Nation these past few months, yet I can count on the fingers of one hand the authors about whom I have written to my contacts among publishing industry editors, acquisitions people, and literary agents. Christina Dudley will be the sixth, and I will be surprised, when you've downloaded Mourning Becomes Cassandra and read it, if you disagree. --Kindle Nation Daily

3.0 out of 5 stars Such great potential February 17, 2011
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
3.5 stars but just couldn't justify rounding it up

This book continues the story of Cassandra, a widow in the process of adopting the child of the unwed teenager she has mentored. We also follow the rocky road of romance once again as she works out her feelings for Daniel, the gorgeous but womanizing hunk she's falling in love with. Like it's predecessor, "Mourning Becomes Cassandra", the writing holds a realism seldom found in Christian novels, while keeping the message a sound one. The characters are human not perfect, not cardboard cut-outs, not black and white but all the shades of grey found in real life. That is what makes this book so endearing.

I especially loved the fact that Ms. Dudley tackled the touchy topic of what it would really be like to fall for a cover-model-drop-dead-handsome man who has women falling all over him everywhere he goes. Seldom do you see stories deal with the insecurities and problems that would develop, especially if the man has quite a reputation for indulging in all the benefits and has no qualms about it - publicly and otherwise. The reader has the opportunity to question, "What would I do if I found myself falling for a man whom I have caught humping more beautiful woman than I knew existed" and "How would I handle it if he professed his love for me but every time I see him, another woman is fawning over him." Hard questions, no easy answers and most assuredly not the flowery gloss-over most romances use.

The problem with the book lies in the way Cass doesn't handle it. These two are the reason we are reading the book! They are the couple to root for, to get that happy ending. Although they do get it, through the majority of the book we see nothing but Cass being really nasty to Daniel.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great summer beach read! June 6, 2010
Format:Kindle Edition
I loved this sequel to Mourning Becomes Cassandra! It is even better than the first book. It's a fun read that made me laugh, and I couldn't wait to see what would happen next. I really related to the main character, Cass, and loved following the twists and turns of her life. While this is a light and quick read, some of the themes are quite deep and thought provoking, but not so heavy that it takes away from the fun. This would be a great book for a long plane trip - it'll make the time fly!

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Read! September 17, 2010

I have to say that this book does not fall within my usual reading "genres"- I am not typically a romance reader, nor do I tend to read Christian fiction- but the writing and the fabulous characters in "Mourning Becomes Cassandra" and then this sequel, "The Littlest Doubts" have turned me into a fan of Christina Dudley! She has done a great job in creating characters that "feel" real, as they deal with the trials and tribulations of their lives. Ms Dudley employs a great mix of humor, personal introspection and interaction between characters that transcends "genre"- these feel like real people dealing with real situations and the internal and external joys, personal struggles and celebrations that are part of daily life in this world. The storyline is fun and lighthearted in places- and deeper and more soul searching in others- and it all works! I ended up reading both books back to back in a 24 hour time period- NOT what I initially expected to do- but I HAD to find out what happened with Cass and the other characters that I had fallen in love with! I would recommend this book to others, like myself, who do not usually read this type of book- there is something for just about everyone! Brava, Ms Dudley, can't wait for your next book!

3.0 out of 5 stars Love to hate her June 12, 2012
By Adina
Format:Paperback
It's true, Cass is a bewildering idiot in this one. But she's genuinely struggling with something many of us have faced - love, confusion, and faith all mixed together. The story line pulls you along as we root for the new mom and her friends. A feel-good read (if you can get over wanting to smack Cass upside the head, and I could).

I recommend it.

More About the Author

The Seattle Times called Christina Dudley's THE BERESFORDS "ingenious and entertaining" in its modern retelling of Jane Austen's MANSFIELD PARK, and Austenprose's Lisa Galek declares, "I would rank The Beresfords with some of the best Austen updates I've ever read or seen."

Dudley's previous novel EVERLIVING was chosen as a Staff Favorite by the University of Washington Bookstore, whose reviewer described it as "spooky and romantic," while her debut was selected as a LoveWebRadio Book-of-the-Month and chosen Top Four of 2010 by DailyCheapReads.com. At the urging of her readers, she penned MOURNING's sequel THE LITTLEST DOUBTS. For the younger readers, her MIA AND THE MAGIC CUPCAKES garnered a 2010 Zola Award for Best Children's Picture Book.

Her latest venture is a series of traditional Regency romances, called "The Hapgoods of Bramleigh," of which THE NATURALIST (November 2013) is the first volume. A VERY PLAIN YOUNG MAN, the second volume, is expected Spring of 2014.

When not writing, Dudley can be found crashing local books clubs, acting in Sunday school skits, and speaking for love or money to any large group that will have her. She also stuffs herself blogging for the Bellevue (WA) Farmers Market as the UrbanFarmJunkie. More than you ever wanted to know about her can be found at her eponymous website. She and her family live in Bellevue, Washington.
