The Local Marketing Secret by Cara Yowell is an Internet marketing book about Local Search Marketing. There are few secrets here, but there are many techniques and tips for doing Local Search Marketing for your company. It states that "73% of all online activity is related to local content (Google)." Even when a user does not put in local data (such as Zip, city or local address), Google usually picks up the local area from the IP address of the computer. So if a potential customer types in "cabinet repair" and they live in Keller, Texas then the top 5 results are likely to be in the Keller area.

The book investigates Google Places and a few other major places to put your local business in the listings. I have only read the first half of the book and gotten several great Internet marketing ideas. The book is about 83 pages so I gave it 4 instead of 5 stars. But a short book is faster to digest and use in practical business situations. This is the only highly recommended book on the subject that I found on Amazon.com.

This is good intro and intermediate Internet marketing material. I expect some advanced material will emerge in 2011 since the topic is relatively new and powerful. Did I mention that Local Search Marketing can be very profitable and requires very little investment in dollars? There are both national (such as by Google and Yahoo) local listing sites, and regional ones (such as for the Dallas/Ft. Worth area) and sites for specialties (such as medical services in Missouri); with reviews from customers.

Several years ago, the author Gary Vaynerchuk caused a stir when he said 90% of the things written about social media was fluff. I would put this book in that category. It's an in between book. It's not detailed enough to provide a small business owner with a blueprint on how to do local search marketing; and it doesn't demonstrate any real research having been done on the challenges of local search SEO. It reads more like a long article in the business section of the Sunday newspaper. The author is correct, local search marketing is today's best solution for getting more online customers to notice a local business. There are many examples of local business owners using local search marketing successfully. I did not see any of these examples in this book. I was very disappointed in the book.

I've had Cara do some local marketing for me in the past, as I've struggled w/my own marketing. When I found out she was writing a book, I begged and pleaded to get a copy of it, and when I saw the manuscript, I was BLOWN AWAY! Cara has put so many things into simple, easy to use language that will *really* demystify just what you should (and shouldn't) do to maximize the crazy power for your own business. To tell the truth, I was surprised to hear Cara was writing this...you know, the whole bit about "magicians not revealing their secrets" and all - LOL. But in all seriousness, pick up this book - you owe to yourself and your business.
