Book Description

It's Hell on Wheels. A simpering madman, possessed by dark magic, transforms the night train into a rolling charnel house. And Hawthorne is about to come face-to-face with an evil beyond imagining.

* * * * *

Praise for That Damned Coyote Hill, the first Hawthorne story:

You've got a mysterious gunfighter on a mission of vengeance, an isolated settlement, a trio of fairly formidable bad guys, a kidnapped little girl . . . but you've also got an even more mysterious old Indian, townspeople who don't act quite right, strange creatures that haunt the prairie . . . mix that together and you have a very entertaining yarn that's an excellent example of the Weird Western. I'm hoping that Lowrance's protagonist in this story [...] will soon make a return appearance.
-- James Reasoner

This quick-reading tale -- somewhere in length between a short story and a novellette -- grabs you from the very beginning and doesn't let go of your ass until the last word, when you put it down, shaken, trying to figure out what the hell just happened.
-- Allan Leverone

Straddling the western and horror genres, Lowrance crafts a driving revenge tale, blood spattered and dust-stained, populated by folks you wouldn't want to meet without a six-shooter at your hip and some who'd make you consider using it on yourself.
-- Eva Dolan

Lowrance gets the twisted weird western genre and delivers a tale full of thrills and shivers ... get on the Lowrance band wagon now, you'll enjoy the ride.
-- Paul Bishop

Spoilers

Set in the old west, a stranger boards a train pulling out of Denver. Little do the other passengers know but most are about to meet a grizzly demise at the hands of a demonic butcher. Hawthorne, who is chasing the train but for another reason entirely, is about the meet his and everyone else's, worse nightmare.

End Spoilers

Some thoughts on "The Long Black Train"...

1.) gory and graphic... not for the faint of heart.

2.) well written with a great sense of anticipation and timing.

3.) although short, some interesting dialogue and character development.

4.) cover art... a picture of a train that is slightly askew... hinting that maybe something is not quite right between these covers. That would be an understatement.

Conclusion:
A short, tense horror story... well written and deftly told.

5.0 out of 5 stars Train from Hell October 2, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
The Long Black Train begins with a mysterious man, "stinking of death", entering the train carrying a small valise. "If anyone could smell the rot on him, they didn't say anything." You know you are about to read something exciting. This mystery man is on a mission to make sure all the passengers on this train understand what it means to sacrifice oneself. Unfortunately, he believes it is his job to show them.

This book is the second installment in the Hawthorne series. As Hawthorne rides through the woods, he hears moaning coming from the train tracks. As he gets closer to the tracks, he begins to notice severed body parts. If that wasn't bad enough, the parts are still moving and groaning. Once again, Hawthorne's mission for vengeance must be put on hold while he tracks down the demon causing this bloody trail.

Heath Lowrance is an excellent writer who has a gift for making you feel like you are right in the center of all the action. I really enjoyed this story and I, definitely, enjoyed the creepy, bloody atmosphere that surrounded me. I look forward to more Hawthorne adventures in the future.

5.0 out of 5 stars Long, Black Train to Hell August 10, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
This is billed as a weird western and it has all the characteristics and is a very fine story. It's longer than a short story but maybe not quite a novella. Hawthorne discovers parts of bodies, dead but somehow still living, strung out along the tracks of the long, black train, and he has to catch up to it to find out what is going on. There's a lot of pretty gory but well described imagery, and the final confrontation is excellent. I really enjoyed it.

A truly fun and grisly tale, a fusion of western and horror that works brilliantly. It's lean, mean and well-crafted. I look forward to more Hawthorne stories!
