Book Description

The Long Shadow is compelling historical novel which tells the human story of the Allied campaign in Salonika during WW! and will appeal to readers of The Island and The Thread.

Fourteen-year-old Andrew discovers his mother's hidden diary at his grandmother's home during a Christmas gathering. His eyes are opened to a family secret when he reads about her time as a nurse in Salonika during the First World War, and the tragic love affair she had with his father, a Greek Officer who died in battle. Four years later, Andrew is impelled to visit his father's land and trace his roots. What - and who - he finds there will change his life forever.
The Long Shadow is filled with descriptions of Greece and its people. Dramatic images of battle and the terrible conditions endured by the Allied Armies entrenched around Salonika in the “Birdcage” are authentic and vivid. Greek music and dance play a vital role, reconciling in Andrew the dichotomy of belonging to two very different cultures and helping him to unite them in his heart and soul.

'I'm immensely impressed by the novel, especially the Greek scenes. It's a marvellously accomplished book. Many congratulations on your achievement.'
Colin Wilson: renowned author of The Outsider, The Occult, Mysteries and many more)

5.0 out of 5 stars A first rate story from beginning to end July 30, 2010
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
While young Andrew's struggle to reconcile his Greek and English heritage is the predominant theme in The Long Shadow it is, in equal parts, a passionately told love story as well.
Each of the characters in this novel, that covers two generations, is a real person. The people and their relationships with each other are extremely complex. And I thought Ms. Proctor's descriptions of scenes were absolutely inspired. The landscapes, weather, even the minutia and feel of equipment in the camp scenes made army life in 1916 come alive. Her descriptions of the old city of Salonika are not just good but exquisite.
The final chapters of this book, in particular, will not allow you to stop reading. I would definitely recommend The Long Shadow to anyone who loves a good story.

5.0 out of 5 stars What a wonderful, heartwarming read! August 5, 2006
Format:Paperback
The Long Shadow kept me company as I rode for 3 1/2 days on the Alaska ferry from Juneau, AK to Bellingham, WA. I loved it! It is rich with descriptions that helped me picture the places and experiences of the characters while the plot kept me interested at every turn. But it was the last couple pages from the end that brought me to tears, literally. Amazed and delighted, I highly recommend this book.

More About the Author

Born in Cairo, Egypt, I came to Britain during winter and saw my first view of snow! My English Dad fell in love with my beautiful Greek Mum in Athens during the war and wrote her a forty page love-letter when fighting in the desert so I guess writing is in my genes! I wrote my first novel in an exercise-book at sixteen and many others after that but then gave up writing for a long time. Now retired and living in Malvern, the muse has returned. I've since written and published The Long Shadow and The Crimson Bed.

My latest novel Middle Watch is set amongs the coasts and lighthouses of England. If you like a novel with depth, passion and drama, this is the book for you!

I also have a chapter 'Between Two Cultures: an Anglo Greek Identity crisis' which you will find in a very interesting book recently released on Greece by the Cambridge Scholars. It is called 'Greece and Britain since 1945' edited by Dr David Wills. ISBN: 978-1-4438-1962-6 obtainable on Amazon.com

I'm really happy to announce that though The Long Shadow is no longer available as a pdf it is now on Amazon as a Kindle book. Some signed print copies are still available from the author and other locations. See my website www.lorettaproctor.co.uk
