Book Description

"Ryan Hyde’s latest offering is true to her style — honest, insightful, and shared from a place that is earthy and sometimes gritty, but quite beautiful in its simplicity and scope." –Blogcritics Books

By the bestselling author of DON'T LET ME GO and PAY IT FORWARD, this entertaining and life-affirming collection of autobiographical stories explores the rewards and challenges of building a happy life of self-knowledge and creative inspiration, from a writer who has been through it all.

"What inspired you to write the novel Pay It Forward?"

Years after the publication of Pay It Forward, this is still the most common question asked of Catherine Ryan Hyde, bestselling and critically acclaimed author of 20 published and forthcoming books, including Don't Let Me Go, When You Were Older, and Pay It Forward, the incredible bestselling novel that led to a movie, a foundation, and an entire social movement.

Everything Pay It Forward became is rooted in a small, but extraordinary act of kindness, which Catherine received as a young adult. It was one moment that caused her to look at life in a different way. It was a moment of pure, human inspiration.

In THE LONG STEEP PATH: EVERYDAY INSPIRATION FROM THE AUTHOR OF PAY IT FORWARD, Catherine shares her story, as well as what inspires her, in a series of funny and totally engaging autobiographical stories that are at once personal and universal.

4.0 out of 5 stars An Enjoyable Journey January 22, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Easy to read - enjoyable writing style with an earthy perspective. Catherine uses her hiking experiences as a metaphor for life. "Don't look up to see how far you still have to climb; instead, look back to see how far you've climbed already." Life is a journey, and she shares her one-step-at-a time approach.

Life can have tragedy and adversity, which we would eliminate if we could. However, it is the fruit that grows from these experiences that make the journey worthwhile. She advises us to believe in ourselves and choose to be happy.

We can find the life we want hiding in plain site...in the life we have now. Stay in the moment - not regretting a past you can't change, or trying to structure or repair a future that hasn't even arrived. Everything you need is here - when doors slam in your face, look around and see if another door is open.

I especially enjoyed her idea of writing "daily gratitudes" - finding something to be grateful for every day by looking and listening in a different way:
- "That lovely moment when it's suddenly possible to grasp that we are exactly where we are meant to be."
- "Everything that happens to me in life, whether I like it or not, seems to steer me down the right path."

An enjoyable journey. Very insightful. If you are a hiker, you will appreciate it even more.

Catherine chooses to write about such down to earth and positive topics. I found something to take away from almost every excerpt included in this book. What a great attitude to live by. I've read other books by this same author and haven't been disappointed with any of them. Keep it up!

5.0 out of 5 stars Reflective and inspiring ... July 6, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition
Catherine Hyde's words of wisdom were a delight to read. Some were a refreshing reminder of things I have learned, others made me stop for a moment and reflect on a new perspective I might gain. The book was quick and easy to read and each time I put the book down, I felt renewed and encouraged. I am anxious to add this to my collection and will frequently share it with others, particularly those who are struggling with the proverbial storms of life. For them, this book might provide an uplifting break in the clouds ... or even the more lasting protection of an umbrella!

5.0 out of 5 stars Lessons in Life August 10, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I am flummoxed by some of the low-star reviews that I read on Amazon. "Seedy life"??? Seriously? That's what you got out of this?

This book is a collection of essays written to express the author's life lessons. Some were learned the hard way. Yes, like most of us, she went through some pretty rough times in order to get where she is now. So what? Does this give anyone the right to look down their nose at her? Is a person not allowed to grow and develop and change? Is a person not allowed to share what they've learned with others?

As a person who has had to learn some pretty hard lessons (like everybody else), I appreciate Hyde for putting into words some of the thoughts and feelings that I've had as I've traveled my own steep path. I'm thankful for finding out that she has a Facebook page (which I intend to bookmark), and a #DailyGratitude that I can subscribe to. I need all the help I can get in learning to master the art of positivity and gratitude. Thank you for listing this book for free on Kindle and allowing me to become aware. It came along at just the right time.

If you are on a journey of learning to love and accept and be at peace with yourself, this book might give you some inspiration on how to get there.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Journey of Life January 12, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
The Long Steep Path …. A path you won’t want to miss. This book not only takes you on Catherine Ryan Hyde’s hiking adventures, but also on her life’s adventures.
Her way of looking at life seems so easy, so simple, so right. It may help you on your own journey. I quote her: “And I do firmly believe that this life is a journey.” “We can find the life we want. It’s hiding in plain sight. Where? Where else … in the life we have now.”
I’ve read this book twice. Once, for pleasure. The second, learning more about my own life, and possibly where I went wrong or right living it. But knowing life will lead you in the right direction if you let it, by not taking the reins trying to make things happen. And just letting your life happen. Maybe the universe knows more about living your life, than your wants and not wants.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Uplifting Read March 3, 2013
By K. Reed
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
First book I've read by Ms. Hyde and I really enjoyed it, the chapters were filled with great stories than transitioned into the point she was making and it provides real life examples to help which are helpful. I found it very uplifting and not in a preachy way, very easy to read without being boring and a great book to go back to every couple of years when you need to reinforce your positive attitude. I left it on the front page of my Kindle, it's that good!
