I agree with the other reviewers. This is an intelligent, enriching film, with good natured humour and sensitive observations about youth, age, family communication and quality of life. Jack Lemmon is a wonderful screen presence, and the beautiful Sarah Paulson is well cast as his bright young companion.

You can tell they had fun making this movie. It's a nice addition to the collection for those who enjoy Jack's work with Walter Matthau.

This movie was made for TV, and certain events near the end stuck in my mind: I waited nearly ten years for its DVD release, and it was worth it.

Jack Lemmon, "The Long Way Home". A great movie full of warmth & loving, with a charming story. Lovable Jack, a giant actor of many great films, never appeared in so beautiful role and moving performance in his entire acting career. This must see flick is the best of the Hollywood greats that only Jack Lemmon could do justice to.See it once and you'll want to see it again many times over. His performance honors his memory.

This was a completely enjoyable story without all the violence, sex, and fowl language than everyone in Hollywood seems to think we want. A touching, somewhat emothional story - just enjoy it!!!

The plot: "elderly" Thomas Gerren gets tired of feeling irrelevant, and tired of having his kids controlling his life. Through some unlikely events, he winds up hitchhiking from Kansas to California with Leanne, a desirable young college student - but he takes his time advising his kids of such a capricious venture. They go nuts with worry, of course. Old Tom seems to enjoy asserting his independence, and becomes friends with Leanne along the way. Both of them learn from each other.

Once in California, Tom meets Leanne's terminally ill father (and her distant mother), and also looks up an "old flame". He phones his kids to announce that he will return to Kansas, but he will be setting some rules. You tell 'em, Tom!

We enjoyed the plot and the acting. The DVD had decent image quality, presented in the old 4:3 format. Unfortunately, it didn't have subtitles. So, I can't bring myself to give it five stars. I'll give it 4½.

I agree with all of the positive comments made by other reviewers and I just want to add this film is TRUE realism..Most people are just trying to navagate through life as best they can with all of their faults and virtues..Reminds me of the very wise observation, "We don't love people because they're perfect because if we did, we'd have no one to love" One added observation, I had never seen Sarah Paulson before, what a treasure!

The Long Way Home is a wonderful family movie starring Jack Lemmon. It is discusses the relationship between an aging father and his adult children and what transpires in making things work for all. A wonderful, touching adventure that teaches about what is important in life and the value of independence for older adults.

A good family movie, funny as only Jack Lemmon can be, but also a look into the challenges that a family faces both from an elderly parent's view and the grown children dealing with change. This movie will be enjoyed by young and old alike.
