Helen Englehardt has written a very personal memoir about losing her husband of 16 years, Anthony "Tony" Lacey Hawkins aboard Pan Am 103 on December 21, 1988 over Lockerbie, Scotland by a Semtex bomb hidden in a radio in an unclaimed suitcase that traveled from Malta to Frankfurt to London to New York route.

Every time around this year especially during the holiday season, I wonder about the families and friends who lived through this terroristic tragedy. This author recounts her relationship and how his loss affected her.

Her husband was full of life and joy during his life. Ironically, he went to visit a dying uncle and relatives aboard a free flight from frequent flying before it expired. His widow recounts the horror about learning his fate with candor and honesty.

Helen became a survivor and not a victim. While still searching for the truth, she has maintained her sanity and well-being especially for her 6 year old son, Alan, who lost his father too.

Despite their loss, I recommend this book to help understand what happened 25 years ago. If security was tighter, Pan Am 103 may have been prevented especially the loss of 270 innocent lives.

Many like Tony just wanted to go home and be with his family for the holidays. There were 35 college students who were returning home from a semester abroad. A spouse's loss is far different than losing your only child like some of the other families. Helen didn't run to the airport like the others. Perhaps she was spared the horror and reality of all their losses.

Ironically, Pan Am 103 was bombed on December 21, 1988 which was the shortest day of the year. Tony and Helen married on June 21, 1972 on the longest day of the year. Their romance gives hope that true love does exist.

I loved Pan Am. Of all the books I have read, and flights I have taken, this audio book taught me a few things I wasn't aware of regarding the horrors of Lockerbie. I felt the Narrator led me to a place where she wasn't a narrator but a family member I knew, but not on the closest of terms. If that makes any sense.
