I have begun my stretch of Pauline studies with Joseph Fantin's monograph, The Lord of the Entire World: Lord Jesus, a Challenge to Lord Caesar.

Fantin has made a considerable contribution to our understanding of Paul's relationship to the Roman Empire - which, is certainly a hot-button these days. His primary concern in this volume is to determine whether Paul, in his use of the title lord for Jesus, occasionally, if not regularly, intended to challenge the Emperor's claim of lordship. In other words, Fantin is seeking to determine whether a polemic against the Emperor exists in the Pauline corpus.

Fantin commences with a discussion of preliminary matters. He expresses his thesis (as stated above), and defines polemic. Then considers the justification for his project, which essentially states the convenience now enabled through recent contributions to Roman Imperial history, technological development regarding search tools, and significant advances in linguistics. Additionally, the Christian community will be challenged to reevaluate its relationship to the State, and, most obviously, Fantin is the first to dedicate an entire research volume to considering the presence of polemic in Paul. He goes on to recount previous studies that have influence current Pauline reception, noting especially Adolf Diessmanm, as well as recent studies by Peter Oakes, Mikael Tellbe, Ian Rock, and John L. White.

The methodology adopted by Fantin is both historical-critical and linguistic. I'll admit, much of linguistic and communication theory was well beyond my understanding. He certainly has a sophisticated grasp of that rising discipline.
