Book Description

Bestselling author Robert J. Morgan explores the rich meaning and transcendent comfort of the world’s best-known and most-loved poem: Psalm 23.

The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.
He makes me to lie down in green pastures;
He leads me beside the still waters.
He restores my soul;
He leads me in the paths of righteousness for His name’s sake.
Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death,
I will fear no evil;
For You are with me; Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me.

You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies;
You anoint my head with oil; my cup runs over.
Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life.
And I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.

Let these gentle words soak into your soul and fill you with the peace you long for.

From Booklist

Beginning with the words “The Lord is my shepherd,” the Bible’s Psalm 23 is perhaps the most memorized of any psalm. Recited by soldiers in the heat of battle, by families praying for the safety and recovery of loved ones, and by others needing courage and hope, the psalm has calmed and inspired people for countless generations. Best-selling author Morgan makes a solid case for studying the psalm’s verses in order to relieve anxiety and gain a sense of peace. He offers several real-life examples of how the words have served people facing difficult times. Beyond analyzing the poem as a metaphor that likens God to a compassionate shepherd, Morgan shares fascinating anecdotes about life with several sheep he and his family have raised as pets. Many of these heartwarming accounts relate to the virtues of the compassionate and nurturing leadership exhibited by shepherds of the Bible. By recognizing the treasures to be found in a single psalm, this book supports important reflection and provides great comfort. Keep this by your bedside for a good night’s sleep. --Susan DeGrane

“I rarely read the introduction to a book, much less a prologue. But when asked to review Rob’s latest book, I wanted to be responsible and read every page, so I dutifully began with the prologue and introduction. By the time I finished, I was quite surprised by how much of a deeper understanding I had gained about a very familiar Psalm. And that paled in comparison to what I received from the rest of the book! Not only do I know Psalm 23 better, but I better know the Lord as my shepherd.” (Dr. Bill Jones, President, Columbia International University)

“In this medicinal book, Rob Morgan offers an alternative to anti-anxiety medications. Even if your life is not stressful, The Lord Is My Shepherd brings soothing peace.” (Benjamin S. Carson, Sr., M.D., author of Gifted Hands)

“Robert Morgan has chronicled an insightful and inspirational journey through the 23rd Psalm. His personal accounts, meaningful illustrations, and biblical references provide a unique and enriching approach to this well-known Psalm. The work gives a fresh, heartfelt interpretation of the text and truths of Psalm 23. He has skillfully shown how Psalm 23 can be applied to our everyday lives. Robert Morgan has given the Christian community a great treasure which I will use often.” (James Flanagan, President of Luther Rice University and Seminary)

“Through his powerful and evocative weaving of words, Rob has gifted the global church with a treasure. His insight into this most popular passage is compelling, clear and concise. His personal stories appropriately give a robust understanding of the most loved and quoted psalm. This book invites you back to your heart’s true home . . . where you will be welcomed, embraced, comforted, and celebrated by the Good Shepherd. Not only will I read and give copies of this book away, I will recommend it to my Ethiopian friends and mission colleagues around the world.” (Bill Harding IV, missionary to Ethiopia)

The Lord Is My Shepherd by Robert Morgan is a phenomenal book and will be a great comfort to people who are walking through valleys. This in-depth look at Psalm 23 sheds new light on the familiar passage. Having raised several sheep, Morgan has plenty of insight. Every phrase is an illustration from the life of the shepherd and the life of the sheep. It is an extremely encouraging read!” (Reese Kauffman, president, Child Evangelism Fellowship, Inc.)

“Rob uses Psalm 22, 23, and 24 to show a triad picture of how the Great Shepherd of the sheep wants to take care of our past, present, and future needs. Rob’s insight into Psalm 23 is spot on, because of his relationship with the Sovereign Shepherd and his experience both shepherding and sheepherding. His personal stories will have you gripping your heart, weeping, rejoicing and ultimately ruminating upon Psalm 23.” (U.S. Army Chaplain (CPT) W Lee Frye, 442nd Battalion Chaplain, Fort Gordon, GA)

The Twenty-third Psalm is the world's best-known and most-beloved poem. It's been engraved on the hearts of every generation from antiquity to modernity. It's been quoted across the centuries and through the millennia, and its enduring message is for

As both a sheep owner and a pastor, author Robert Morgan knows a thing or two about shepherding, and brings that understanding to this beautiful book. Verse-by-verse explanations of the psalm uncover the rich blessings of the time-tested promises, and intriguing stories of men and women who have lived the psalm in the difficulties of life offer invaluable insights into your own life.

Take a journey through the simple truths of this life-giving psalm and enjoy the restoration and calm that are waiting for you.

Psalm 23 is exactly twelve lines long but it is densely packed with meaning. Robert J. Morgan is both a pastor and a sheep owner so he understands about sheep, therefore he understands a lot of the meaning of this wonderful psalm. The book is broken down into two parts: Part One, "The Lord Is My Shepherd" and Part Two, "I Shall Not Want".

Author Robert J. Morgan is the pastor of Donelson Fellowship in Nashville, Tennessee, which has over 3,000 members and where he has served for over 30 years. Morgan has millions of copies of books in print, and another claim to fame is that he is both a sheep owner and a pastor. Tackling the most beloved of all the Psalms is a high order, and yet who better to do this job than a man who has raised sheep and also pastors people? Morgan's verse-by-verse explanation of Psalm 23 brings with it considerable wisdom and insight only gained by investing blood, sweat and tears (and many years) in both people and the sheep.

Morgan skillfully and thoughtfully dissects each phrase in Psalm 23 offering biblical, historical and modern-day commentary and explanation at each point. His love for the Word of God is evident as he carefully exegetes each precious promise and comforting truth for readers to slowly, quietly and deeply consider and internalize. Even reading the text headlines of each chapter affords Christians substantial comfort as Morgan piques interest and promise to those who take the time to study Psalm 23 and all that God offers as a result. Some of the specific promises tailored to today's reader include: His peace in life's meadows; His power in life's trenches; His plan for life's pathways; His presence in life's valleys; His provision on life's tablelands; His potion for life's hurts; His promises for life's journey; and His palaces for life's end.

As Morgan notes, in only a hundred words, Psalm 23 sums up all our needs in life and all the abundance of God's grace. It begins with "The Lord" and ends with "forever." Morgan also makes the point that readers should take care to read the before and after Psalms surrounding Psalm 23.

Robert Morgan has written a wonderful book about the 23rd Psalm. I am not an avid reader, but found it hard to put it down. I even taught an adult Bible School week long session using the book as the basis.
