Book Description

May 1, 2012 The Lost Fleet (Book 8)
New York Times bestselling author Jack Cambell's space saga hits lightspeed with an action-packed story of interstellar war.

Admiral John "Black Jack" Geary earned his rank after being revived from cryogenic sleep to lead the Alliance to victory against the Syndicate Worlds. But his superiors question his loyalty to the regime. Now in command of the First Fleet, Geary is tasked with exploring the frontier beyond Syndic space, a mission he fears deliberately puts the fleet--and himself--in harm's way.

An encounter with the alien Enigmas confirms Gear'y fears. Attacked without warning, he orders the fleet to jump star systems--only to enter the crosshairs of another hostile alien armada. Ignoring all of the First Fleet's attempts to communicate peaceful intentions, this system's species send their ships into battle on suicde runs, while guarding the exiting jump point with a fortress of incalculable power.

Now, with a faction of his officers determined to eliminate this new threat despite the cost, Geary must figure out how to breech the enemy's defenses so the fleet can reach the jump point without massive casualties--and knowing that the Enigmas are most likely waiting on the other side...

4.0 out of 5 stars Good Continuation To The Series May 2, 2012
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
Bottom line is this book is probably slightly better than average compared to the series as a whole.

The good:
X New race encounters/tactics/relationships
X Same great space battles, but having to use some new tricks
X Dealing with the complications of aging fleet ships
X Some interesting events dealing with Syndics
X Nice growth of some 2nd-tier characters
X Less rehash/recap of what's in previous books (I guess the author realizes people buying this book will have almost certainly read one of the previous ones.)
X Less emphasis on the love/jealousy triangle between Geary, Diplomat Rione, and the Dauntless Captain
X Author picked a nice stopping point (not a terrible cliffhanger)

The bad:
X How many times does the main character have to say "I'm not Black Jack"? Seriously, we get it already. By now it's well into the hundreds.
X Same corny dialog. Probably a bit more than usual.
X A lot of characters remain very 2-dimensional / stereotype
X $13.00 for the kindle version. 'nuff said.
X At the end the author plugs another book "The Lost Stars: Tarnished Knight". It's basically part of the same timeline told from Syndic perspective. I think we need to focus on finishing the main story before we start milking it via side shows.

One last thought to my fellow readers hooked on stories like this: I recently stumbled across another series identical in flavor but actually a bit more intense: "Aurora: CV-01 (The Frontiers Saga)" is the first in the series. Short & cheap little books, but they are high-impact. Really surprised me. Might help with your craving for more until the next book in this series comes out.

4.0 out of 5 stars Black Jack is back May 15, 2012
By Waymil.
Format:Audible Audio Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
After a relatively benign prior book(Dreadnaught), Jack Campbell returns to Lost Fleet mode. Sent to investigate aliens beyond human boundaries, John Geary does just that. He finds some races friendly and some not but in true Black Jack style, he negotiates all challenges in this well written sequel to his Lost Fleet novels only to find, on his return, that human space may turn out to be more challenging than the aliens.

It seems to me that Campbell has difficulty keeping momentum all the way to the conclusion of his sagas, a problem encountered in the ending to the previous Lost Fleet series as well. The battles are, as usual, awesome, but I wish there had been more of them, and less focus on the quirks of alien civilizations, which lack nuance, and remind me of science fiction from decades ago such as the Lensman series. There are also some patently hilarious moments, including a fun jab at his main character's gun-toting, incongruous covers (the Admiral never once holds a gun!). Overall, I enjoyed this book immensely, but readily admit that a large part of my enjoyment was due to an abiding love of the series and Hemry's writing in general. I'm continually impressed by his ability to write fun, exciting action which does not require de-activation of higher brain function to enjoy. Hollywood blockbusters could learn a lot.

When is the Preview for the Next Book Comig Out?
It's usually a few months prior to the book's release when it's pretty nearly in final form. I just went over the copy edits for Guardian, which is being released in May. Argh! So Frustrated with Reviewers
Wow, I couldn't agree more with the good riddance part. Just the topic of what I am waving to. Mr. Hemry has no power over what a publisher charges, and he has contracts. If that is beyond your ability to understand then indeed good riddance and the topic of the books was probably lost on you.... Read more

And no Kindle version......
Nook should be in the works, too. I'm not sure why that hasn't shown up yet. I'll check with my editor. I think publishers have figured out how important it is these days to bring out books in the major ebook formats.
