Totally brilliant and weird little story that will have you enthralled from the first paragraph. Strange, awkward Agatha Bodenham finds herself totally alone after her mother's death; she tries to conjure up the imaginary friend, Clarissa, whom she played with in her youth. Tentative of others' reactions at first as she talks and plays with her, it soon seems that the elfin child is real, as others engage with her too.
But Clarissa does not remain a child forever. Though still devoted to Agatha, she starts to demand that they experience the adventures they have only played at. Cars, dances, picnics; Agatha, old before her time, must tag along or perhaps lose her...

A fascinating metaphor about enmeshed families. It describes aspects of relationships and identities rarely described in novels. It's not a particularly thrilling books, just very interesting.

What a novel! Poetic, haunting. Able to be convincing despite being an unreal story.
