5.0 out of 5 stars Super cute, on-target heartful read for children... July 16, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Loved this super cure on-target, heart-ful (you can really feel the emotion from the characters) read. On target for children, I think they'll really like the characters (Kevin, his mom, and his dog Lucky), the story is a good read.

A couple of mis-notes were the use of words like rhythmic which felt too advanced. Used in description, in a scene with Kevin, early on--even though the word is defined in the book glossary--its use felt awkward and unnecessary and neither the definition or the word usage seemed likely to convey the meaning well to a 7-10 year old child. Another mis-note was the use of mismatching Labrador Retriever pictures. The first Lab picture is yellow and the second one is white, and the mismatching continues through the book (which takes away from the experience of this story really being about a specific Labrador).

Overall, though, the story is charming. The author is especially gifted at creating a nuanced emotional experience for and between characters (and so for the reader, as well). You can really feel Kevin's fear at the sound of breathing and creaking as someone or something approaches in the opening chapter. The mother-child relationship is well-developed. There was a picture (Lucky as a Dragon) that was missing in the Cloud Reader, which seemed to be a book error, which was disappointing. I loved the inner dialogue of Kevin's funny and very loyal dog Lucky:

"...if Kevin was in trouble, the garbage cans could wait."

The book has a nice moral message (which unfortunately made earlier scary yet meaningless plot points seem like red herrings, which isn't good in a book that isn't a mystery). The author is obviously a very heart-ful person. Although a number of small things about this book prevent me from being a raving fan, which is why I'm giving it only 4 stars, the story ended up being largely charming. Young children or children of average intellect will enjoy this book. Happy reading~*

"The Lucky Little Labrador: Haunted Halloween!" by C.J. Smiles is a cute little chapter book from the "A Little Readers Book" collection. It is designed specifically to help early readers develop and enhance their reading skills. It even includes a vocabulary list of potentially new words, along with their definitions, so the young readers can understand what a new word means when they encounter it.

In this story it is approaching Halloween, and Kevin has his heart set on dressing up as a Knight in shining armor, while his labrador, Lucky, dresses up as a fierce, fire-breathing dragon. It took some serious shopping, but they finally found just the right costumes, and the duo could barely contain their excitement as Halloween drew nearer. But Kevin had forgotten about the real Haunted House at the end of their block! Just as he was turning around to avoid that house, Lucky saw a squirrel and chased it around the side of the Haunted House! What was Kevin to do? How could he get back his dog without alerting the mean old Mr. Jenkins to his presence?

This story is both instructive and enlightening. Young readers will learn new words, along with their meanings. But they will also learn that rumors aren't necessarily true! Just because "everybody says" something, doesn't mean it's true. In fact, poor old Mr. Jenkins wasn't mean at all, and his house wasn't haunted. He was actually sad, because none of the kids ever came to his house to trick-or-treat! Kevin learned that Mr. Jenkins was really a pretty nice old guy... and he gave out LOTS of good candy! There are other "puppy" books in this series, but their focus is always on developing reading skills. I recommend this book for all the little readers on your shopping list. They will surely enjoy reading it, and will enjoy the fact that you got it for them!

We have bought a few titles from the Little Reader's series but my daughter prefers the Lucky books. Definitely a great series for kids which is entertaining and also builds vocabulary. Considering that we read them over over, they are well worth the $3!
