I read this book as an undergraduate in the 1970s and was absolutely enthralled and riveted. It is a superb example of history of science writing and the writer has a wise and humane perspective on history and philosophy writ large. Joravsky's skills are equivalent to those of Hugh Trevor-Roper.

IT IS NOT WELL WRITTEN. IT IS OVERLOADED WITH DETAIL, NEVER CLARIFYING ITS MAIN POINTS. IT NEEDED A SHARP EDITORIAL PENCIL
