I'm a big fan of music from Mali, but I wasn't very familiar with Amadou & Mariam when I bought this CD. When it arrived, it was immediately apparent what a treasure I had found. A compilation of some of their best albums, it's 15 tracks and 75 minutes of sonic beauty. Their voices are stunning, and the music is rich and warm. It has a very authentic traditional sound, with subtle modern nuances that enhance, rather than detract from, the overall feel of the music. Occasional harmonica flourishes, for example, blend seamlessly with ancient Malian instruments. For fans of the Farka-Toures and the Diabate clan, this is a must-have CD. For casual, curious listeners, this is a great place to start. I have no doubt you will find "The Magic Couple" magical too!

Amadou Bagayoko and Mariam Doumbia are blind musicians/singers from Mali who have been composing, performing and touring together since around 1980 when they married after meeting at the Mali Institute for the Young Blind. They are not prolific recorders, and released only four albums of original compositions in their first 25 years (plus a couple of collaborations like the brilliant `Dimanche a Bamako' produced & mostly written by Manu Chao).

This 2009 album is a sort of `greatest hits' compilation of the best recordings from the 1997-2002 period, originally released on the albums `Sou Ni Tile', `The Ni Mousso' &' Wati'. It contains 15 different numbers, kicking off with `Je Pense a Toi' a hit single in France in 1998 which made them nationwide celebrities.

Mali has produced some of the most original and best music in the world during the past 30 years (if in doubt, listen to the sublime Salif Keita) and this collection is no exception. If `world music' has never really floated your boat before & you're put off by non-English-language songs, try this. It's danceable, joyous and musically quite complex, and you might like it.

"It was their collaboration with Manu Chao on 2005's Dimanche a Bamako that propelled Amadou & Mariam to star status outside the Francophone African diaspora.
But by that time they had already released three albums recorded outside Africa, the highlights of which are collected on this splendid compilation. They show the duo to have developed their alliance well beyond their native Malian roots since first fusing musical destinies at Bamako's Institute for the Young Blind, where Amadou served as musical director and first encountered Mariam's enchanting voice. Even on 1997's Sou Ni Tile, their itchy African pop was being augmented and blended with the rhapsodic Indian violin of Sameh Catalan for "Je Pense à Toi", flowing like silk over the hand-drum pulse and Amadou's guitar fills; and by 1999's Tje Ni Mousso, they were incorporating Colombian trombonist Andres Viafara on "Djagneba", and Valentin Clastrier's hurdy-gurdy on "C'est Comme Ça".
But it's in the gentle collusion of their voices that the duo's appeal resides, both in the call-and-response chant of a song like Amadou's "Combattants" or the lyrical grace of Mariam's "Sarama", where Amadou layers tendrils of cyclical guitar lines around her voice like rose briars around her heart. A magical couple indeed". Andy Gill
