Editorial Reviews

Review

With the exception of a brief foreword, an introduction and a spattering of quotations from the artist, ‘The Magic of M.C. Escher’ is entirely visual, filled with prints, drawings, and rough sketches. (The New York Times Book Review)

[Escher’s] imaginative metamorphoses of geometric patterns into flocks of birds and mind-bending spatial inventions epitomize our astonishment with the inter-related profusion of the world. (ARTPHAIRE)

I have been teaching a course using Escher's artwork for years. If you are looking for an excellent overview of Escher's artwork, this is the one book worth owning. It has been out of print for nearly a decade, and apparently is back in this new paperback edition. Bool's "Life and Complete Graphic Work" is more comprehensive, but really only as a catalog - most of the images are black and white. "The Graphic Work" and "29 Master Prints" are limited and less pretty than this book. "Masters of Deception" has only a small amount of Escher's work. Ernst's similarly titled "Magic Mirror of MC Escher" is excellent, and has much to say about Escher's ideas, but the artwork in that book is less of the focus. "Visions of Symmetry" is also a fine book, but really only shows Escher's watercolor sketchbook in any detail.

The Magic of MC Escher has beautiful reproductions of all of Escher's important works. There is a very small amount of text, really just a short intro and some judiciously chosen quotations sprinkled throughout. If you want a book simply for the enjoyment of Escher's art, you cannot do better than this one.

We returned from the Netherlands, where we visited Escher's museum (in Den Haag) with my almost 7 year old. He was fascinated with his work, and continued talking about it and wanted to go back.
When we got home I searched for a book that would contain plenty of images, and too a gamble with this book. Success! This is exactly what I was looking for. My son loves looking at the pictures, tries to copy some with tracing paper, and now is even making his own original work based on Escher.
They also include some letters Escher wrote, which I find to be very interesting.

Most people are familiar with M.C. Escher but this is a new and interesting collection. It contains beautiful reproductions of some of Escher's most famous works. But, what I found to be new and interesting is that there are many quotes from Escher commenting on his works. Insight into his thinking is fascinating. Also, there are many examples of how he created his images. It is so interesting to actually see how he drew his images and the detailed planning involved. I highly recommend this beautiful book.

Like most people, I was familiar with Escher's famous "globe" and "staircase" woodcuts, but this book somewhat chronologically illustrates a broad scope of his work, from his early woodcuts of trees and Italian landscapes to intimate portraits of his aging parents. It also shows that his work was rooted in mathematical precision and obsession. The fold-out pages are wonderful and the method of identifying works on each page is easy to follow once you understand the methodology. As others have noted, the quotes from Escher himself enliven each page and illustration. A wonderful gift.

This is one of the best collections that I have ever seen. I saw a review in the New York Times and had to have this book. My son, who is artistic, thinks it's wonderful as well. The colors are crisp and the drawing everything you would expect from Escher. I highly recommend this book for anyone's collection.

"The Magic of M.C. Escher" is a wonderful book full of pages and pages of artwork. There are also sketches and text about the process he went through to complete several of his pieces. Great book!

Gift for my wife, who fell in love with Escher long ago. She saw some of her favorites in a new light and found some new ones to admire.
Quality print job. It's ppbk, but appropriate for coffee table.
