I actually would give this book 3 and a half stars. I'm very familiar with the work of Pastor Carl Gallups through his ministry on Youtube. I frequently view his videos and ever since he announced this book, he's promoted it like crazy. In one interview, he stated that it is not only a Christian apologetics book, but a book aimed at atheists and agnostics. I just finished reading it, and I'd like to discuss what I disliked first.

I don't think any atheist would read this book from cover to cover. Not necessarily because they'll scoff at his evidence, but simply because I feel Carl takes too many shots at atheists. By that I mean he overgeneralizes the secular community by assuming all of them willfully choose to deny and try to refute the existence of God. Not all secularists believe in the evolutionary theory, let alone accept it as fact. I just feel that he could have spoke of them a little bit more objectively. He could have also done a better job convincing the reader why Christianity is the only true religion.

I study Christian apologetics a lot so most of what I read were things I already knew. That's why I personally feel the book wasn't that groundbreaking. Let me discuss the things I did like though.

He made some very good points showing the evolutionary theory to be far from settled science. It actually makes a lot of sense why he and a lot of other Christians claim evolution to be a religion. Read the book to understand how. I also liked how he ties in Christian beliefs and real science with vivid and thought-provoking analogies. He had quite a few great arguments against the common questions atheists and agnostics ask like "Why would God allow evil and suffering in the world if He's good?

The Magic Man in the Sky is an insightful, entertaining defense of the Christian faith. Carl Gallups delivers a dynamic, unapologetic stance for God and Intelligent Design. He uses science(such as quantum physics), analogies, the Scripture, and history to show the irrefutable proof of God's existence. Never again let an atheist tell you that you can't prove the existence of God! The Christian reader will be encouraged to find that the Bible can be proven and the evidence God has displayed in History as well as His creation. The reader who is unsure of God's existence will be given undeniable proof and God's plan for salvation. This book will certainly be enjoyed by all who read it!

I really liked this book. Good factual substance written clearly enough for a part time reader like myself. Not only did it help build my faith, but allow some solid answers for my non Christian friends. There are several people who begin a faith in Christ because someone gave them this book.If you are a christian, I would recommend getting two, one for yourself and another for that person you would want to reach.

I wasn't sure whether to give this book one star or three, since it's either the worst kind of preaching-to-the-choir apologist tripe or a fairly competent parody thereof. Poe's Law tells us that distinguishing between the two is often impossible, and so I have to assume that the author was sincere in his efforts to defend his faith. He does so in a manner consistent with the rest of the field--with spectacular failure.

Chapter 6: "The Straw Man" is the part of the book that made me start to think Gallups was being facetious. He described very accurately what a straw man argument entails, explained exactly why it's fallacious, and he even looked down on it as dishonest and sneaky... which it is! He gave several examples of straw men at work. What he didn't do is offer any defense for why he'd blatantly engaged in this fallacy several times in the book up to that point--including several incidents that match up precisely to examples he gave. Then, at the end of the chapter, he gleefully set up another straw man on top of a straw man that was set up by a straw man character he created at the beginning of the book. And then he breathlessly promised to spend the rest of the book knocking down that straw man, despite the fact that it's propped up so firmly by his other straw men.

But don't take my word for it. As of the time I'm submitting this review, you can read the entirety of chapters 1 and 6 in the "look inside" preview that Amazon provides. See the hypocrisy and irony--of which the author seems so oblivious--for yourself.

A relevant book for those who wish to deepen their faith and know that their faith is based on truth, historical facts, true scientific information and logical thinking. It is a great book on apologetics - giving a defense for the Christian faith. I would have liked the author to use a more modern version of the Bible when he included quotes as the old King James version (which he used) can be cumbersome to read and takes longer to digest. Overall I enjoyed and found this book easy reading, interesting with thought-provoking examples.
