Editorial Reviews

Product Description

Amazon.com

Author of modern jazz anthems like "Hot House" and "Our Delight," Tadd Dameron was among the finest composers produced by the bop movement, and certainly its greatest orchestrator, able to give a big band the litheness of a quintet or the sonic breadth of a large orchestra. His struggle with narcotics took an enormous toll, however, including imprisonment, and recording opportunities were few. This one from 1962 is among the finest products of his later career, with a big band of outstanding musicians playing some of his strongest charts, from the gorgeous trumpet sonorities of "Fontainebleau" to the pure bop of "Our Delight." Trumpeter Blue Mitchell, tenor saxophonist Johnny Griffin, and pianist Bill Evans are among the gifted soloists, and the band is driven through its paces by Philly Joe Jones, a truly great big band drummer (though he seldom assumed that role) and a longtime Dameron associate and supporter. --Stuart Broomer

Tadd Dameron was one of the heroes of the be bop era. He was a great composer and arranger and a rather average pianist. He made this recording in 1962 and assembled some outstanding musicians. I am not aware of any other examples of Philly Joe Jones anchoring a big band but he does it quite well. There are many other stars here including Clark Terry, Jimmy Cleveland, Johnny Griffin, Bill Evans and Ron Carter. Many of the Tadd Dameron classics are here but my one complaint is that often the numbers are too short. The great soloists should have been given more room to blow. This is a very good CD that could have been a classic.

Recorded in 1962 - A fair album but a disappointing one as far as tune selection is concerned and the alternate takes don't help matters. Critics of the time were said not to have given it good reviews which means Tadd was being phased out in any event. Johnny Griffin is the suprise opening soloist on On Misty Night. The bridge played by the band is different from the version with Coltrane but it is not very clear. Amazing how they can play together like that. The vocal numbers - If You Could See Me Now and You're A Joy are sung by Barbara Winfield. Tadd had just wriiten a big band arrangement of If You Could See Me Now for Milt Jackson's BIG BAGS album and you can search Amazons Digital Department for numerous download instrumental versions of his most famous ballad. Clark Terry and Joe Wilder have some trumpet solos. Jerry Dodgion and Jerome Richardson can be heard on flute on occasion, Bill Evans is pianist instead of Tadd himself, but it is Clark Terry who has the last say on the last track on Tadd's last album.

Good performances on interesting arrangements of tunes familiar to enthusiasts of the music. Dameron's melo9dies are all straightforward and very nicely developed in these tracks.
