The Magnificent Life of Gravvy Brown will take you somewhere you've never been before, early 20th Century New Orleans and around the world through the eyes of the main character, Gravvy Brown, as he awaits execution for the death of his mother, Annadelle Rose Brown. But, once you get to know Gravvy you'll continue to ask yourself, why, how could this young, sweet boy kill his mother who he loved so much, who loved him so much and who provided him with such a "magnificent life?"
Once you start to read this book - forget not wanting - you can't put it down until you read every sentence...
Well written, well developed, and very intriguing... this book is magnificent to say the least. It's an instant, timeless classic crossing all boundaries. I absolutely loved it. I can't stop thinking about it. I want to read it again. DeVaughn Lilly provides such vivid detail that you see, feel, smell, and touch every instance described this story. It evokes emotion, making you laugh as well as cry. It's the best history lesson you'll ever receive. It's destined to become a true classic up there with the likes of James Baldwin's "If Beale Street Could Talk" and Richard Wright's "Native Son."

The Magnificent Life of Gravvy Brown by Devaughn Lilly is non stop action in a historical context. Born just before the Roaring 20s, Gravvy Brown went on the be the youngest person in Louisiana history to be executed for murder and the first person to be executed by the electric chair - just three days before his twenty-first birthday.

Set as a frame story, The Magnificent Life of Gravvy Brown is Gravvy Brown's conveyance of three generations of his family's history to a reporter looking to get his big break the day before Gravvy's execution. Gravvy's voice during the book is easy, reflective and enthralling. DeVaughn Lilly did a tremendous job letting Gravvy paint the most vivid picture of the life and times of himself and his mother and even his grandmother and how they are all intertwined through struggle, drugs and racism. I was so immersed in the Gravvy's narrative that I forgot that I was reading a story within a story. The other thing that jogged my memory was the reporter David Wolfe occasionally asking a question or making a comment to the imprisoned Gravvy.

Each time I picked up the book, I felt like I was a part of the journey, seeing the world through Gravvy's eyes. The version of the book I read had 344 pages. I chuckled to myself when Gravvy was born just before the 200 page mark because I felt like we had gone through a lifetime of experiences with Gravvy by then. His inclusion in the actual story had yet to begin. Reading The Magnificent Life of Gravvy Brown felt like sitting around that one family member that knows everything about everybody. Gravvy makes it is easy to get caught up in this novel.

Set in New Orleans at the turn of the century, the story of Gravvy Brown and his Mama, Annadelle Rose Brown is brought to magnificent life between the pages of author Devaughn Lilly's historical fictional novel "The Magnificent Life of Gravvy Brown."

Waiting to be put to death is where Gravvy Brown recounts his roots and what has brought him to the predicament he now faces.
He gives an excellent account of the interesting life of Annadelle Rose Brown from birth through childhood, love, addictions, her career and family. The impeccable historical events timely intertwined with the dramatic story kept me totally absorbed in this novel.

I enjoyed the entire cast of characters and the way the story evolves.

A few things caught my eye. On page 267 when it was stated "Mama would no longer be Annadelle. She presented herself as Rose Brown." I was perplexed because throughout her adult life she WAS known as Rose, the name she chose to go by since the age of 12. The author over compensates on some descriptions, repeating them in later chapters. I pretty much found it hard to believe that Mama was in love with Richard and as the author put it "taking long walks on the beach and sneaking off." When did the HIGHLY busy prostitute, drug addict, thief and gambler have time?? To me it seemed like she forgot she was in love. Also I'll just say that; unless it's a name always capitalize the first word of dialogue.

But even with the above said, this is an excellent recommended debut novel that is worth your reading time.

It takes a real story-teller to be able to grab you in the beginning of a book and keep your attention until the very end. There might be twists and turns and few surprises, but by the last page you can't help but smile because you enjoyed the literary adventure you were just a part of. That is what I felt when I finished THE MAGNIFICENT LIFE OF GRAVVY BROWN.

Author Devaughn Lilly takes you into the life of a man that is about to lose it all and gives you a look at how his very existence came about, the life of the woman who would be not only his mother but close friend and the destruction that would bring it all crashing down.

The time period that the author chose to set the story in only added to the mystique of the novel, but you can clearly see that no matter what the actual year it is something that is just as real for us today as any other time. Gravvy Brown is a man that we get to see grow into his own skin, grappling with the very issues that readers today can understood only too well. His life would mean nothing to many if it was not recorded, and for that we can be grateful, as his fictional presence rings true to those who know what it's like to go down for something that was no fault of your own.

Hands down one of my favorite books that I've read this year, THE MAGNIFICENT LIFE OF GRAVVY BROWN is really just that... Magnificent.
