Outsiders have been coming to Maine, and writing about their experiences, since at least 1524, which is the first account mentioned in "The Maine Reader." Other narratives follow, some fact, some thinly disguised fiction, some poetry, seasoned with a small selection of illustrations and photographs. Some of the authors are or were well-known, such as Nathaniel Hawthorne, Henry David Thoreau and Kenneth Roberts. Others were not so well-known, but have stories to tell as well. What they have in common are impressions of Maine, and its forests, mountains, and shores, arranged in rough chronological order up through the mid-1980's.

There may be something for just about everyone here, although it helps a lot if the reader already has some familiarity with Maine. This reviewer particularly enjoyed Robert Smith's account of rough life in a logging camp, Laura Ridgewell's self-interview about the challenges of being a lobsterman's wife, and Lura Beam's story of her parent's hard but rewarding life in a small Maine town. There is a decent selection, and no requirement to read all of them. Recommended, even in used condition, to those interested in reading up on the State of Maine, from a number of points of view.

My wife is from one of Maine's original families (Mt. Desert Island). While I was a student at Harvard in the 1960's we took the opportunity to visit her great great great grandfather's home. In the early part of this century we returned for a more extensive visit. Yet it was only her connection that we really explored.

This work allows one to explore many facets of the state through the eyes of various writers, some we know from other connections. It is particular helpful in providing an appreciatioon for the challenges of lumbering and the life of the fishermen (and a delightful essayof one fisherwoman).
