Book Description

"In her debut crime thriller, The Mamacita Murders, Debra Mares takes us into the heart and soul of sex crimes prosecutor's Gaby Ruiz' gritty and often heartbreaking job. It's a world that the author has experienced up close -- since 2004, Debra has been a county prosecutor in Riverside, CA, assigned to the Sexual Assault and Child Abuse Unit.

Laura, a 17-year-old prostitute, and the key witness in a sex abuse trial, is missing. When she's found in a motel room, brutally attacked and left for dead, the list of suspects isn't pretty -- and sex crimes prosecutor Gaby Ruiz is determined to find out who tried to kill her witness.

Gaby has dedicated her life to protecting and finding justice for at-risk women. Maybe it's because she can't shake her guilt over not being able to protect her own mother from a violent death at the hands of Gaby's stepfather.

Now it's Gaby who's in danger. Can she find the truth in time to save her own life?

Here's the setup:

When Laura, a 17-year-old prostitute, is sexually assaulted and left for dead, sex crimes prosecutor Gaby Ruiz is on the case. Laura's not only a victim of attempted murder, she's also the key witness in one of Gaby's trials. Did an assailant connected with Gaby's trial ransack Laura's room and assault her -- did Laura's boyfriend try to kill her because she wanted to leave the Lincoln Gang's prostitution ring -- or did law enforcement try to kill Laura to protect one of their own? The investigation twists from the backwoods in Tuckford County to the back rooms of law enforcement buildings all the way to the Walled City.

Gaby also runs The Mamacita Club, a haven for at-risk women from her vintage Airstream motor home. Women affected by drugs, gang and domestic violence, sex crimes, and broken homes -- they're all in The Mamacita Club. In fact, Gaby has spent all of her professional life seeking justice for others. But it is not until Laura goes missing, that Gaby is able to start searching for justice for herself and begin to fix her own guilt-ridden past for not protecting her mom from an abusive relationship -- this time to save her own life and seek closure over her own mother's death." 4.0 out of 5 stars Good Read May 3, 2012
By Becky
Format:Kindle Edition
I did enjoy this book-I didn't guess the criminal/murderer until the end. The twists and turns kept me reading, fast paced action,I kept reading to find out what happened next. The main character was a prosecutor for sex crimes and she has experience as a victim-witnessed her mother's murder by her step-father. She forms a "club" with her angel friends and their mission is to help change women/girls lives who are affected by gangs, prostitution, drugs and violence. Gabby is assigned to prosecute in a case of one of her girls (Laura), the storyline and plot are well written. I did receive a copy in exchange for reviewing the book, but I plan to read the next book by this author and would recommend this book.

"Mamacita Murders"? What murders??? The only murder in this whole poorly-written book is the one where the main character's stepfather killed her mom 20 years earlier, and he's been serving life in prison since then.

Contrary to the reviews of her friends, this book was *not* well-written. Even writing basics like making it clear who was speaking were handled poorly throughout the entire book.

The characters were not well-developed. Rather, they were black-and-white caricatures that maintained their stereotypes until the author decided that it would help the plot along to immediately reveal them as something else.

For example, the cop who committed the attempted murder? Who allegedly kills himself because of "remorse"??

He's first revealed to us as an earnest young rookie who made an honest mistake in stopping and arresting a guy. This is how all the experienced cops in his city (not small town) police department view him...earnest, honest, rookie. Even though he's single and lives in a 3,000 sq. ft. McMansion with an expensive giant flat screen TV, etc. (which no one questions...although the main character wonders how he has $10K in the bank.)

Then he's revealed to us...by a police property clerk, no less...as having been a corrupt cop in other counties. Are we *seriously* to believe that no one on his current police force did any background checking into this guy? That no one else had known that he was actually dirty? That no one bothered sharing this rather important information?

Not only that, but the guy is also revealed...in Latin America...to be a dirty cop with a rich criminal family in Latin America, whom he visits regularly and participates more than willing in "bad stuff" with. So the cops in Latin America know he's a crooked US cop...the cops in the surrounding counties around where he works in the US know he's a crooked cop...but the local PD didn't??? Gimme a break.

Then! The author would have us believe that, when this crooked cop realizes he didn't cover his tracks as well as he'd believed, he doesn't simply skip out to join his rich, corrupt family. Nope. He kills himself. Out of 'shame'??? Good grief! What utter nonsense.

I'm also astonished at how many other reviewers say they didn't guess who the final "bad guy" was. I mean, it should have been pretty obvious about halfway through the book. It's not like the author is subtle, after all.

The fact is, the author simply doesn't know how to develop and reveal characters and/or motives. (Even when she models the main character after herself...or perhaps that was part of the problem?)

And talk about a book full of beating dead horses! OMG. Those poor dead horses were beaten, then beaten again, then beaten again...it was dreadful. We had to suffer through countless lectures/sermons (from her friends, her dead mom, from "angels") about personal issues that the main character never gets through her thick skull.

Oh, she'd *say* she finally understood...but, of course, she didn't. And we'd have to go through it again...and again...and again. I think you get the drift. I got sooooo tired of her self-centered shoulda/woulda/coulda "everything is all my fault" nonsense. People like that are annoying enough in real life. Why should they be any more likeable in a poorly written novel?

By the way, we didn't find out if Christina is OK or if Javier was actually convicted of molestation. Perhaps the author intends the first question will be the plot of her "next book in the series" (and never thought to mention the latter which was soooo importanrt at one point)...but I will never know, because I will never read anything by this author again.

Frankly, I believe that both murder mysteries and "chick lit" ought to decently written and entertaining...and this author hasn't shown she can do either one.

1.0 out of 5 stars repeating content November 2, 2012

The book quit working after a few chapters. You can certaintly get a feel for the writer. It may get better but several times I got the feeling that we went to commercial and the writer felt a need to refresh my memory about who people were and what the club was and that it was in an airstream - I got it the first few times you mentioned it. I dont think it is necessary to say the title of the book 400 times in a few pages
