5.0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable and interesting novella. October 24, 2013

"The Man with the Ice Cream" is a short read, got through it in maybe an hour? Bullard uses an efficient style, very light on descriptions, very focused on plot. If you're looking for a quick sci-fi story that moves fairly fast, then you might be interested. The story is also somewhat non-linear (which I mention because there are some people that really need linear stories).

The story focuses on a man named Tal that has developed technology that can read people's emotions. Tal markets his creation of course, making him one of the richest people on the planet. But he doesn't stop there. He's got a goal that's more important to him than money - and trying to figure out his plan is what makes the book so fun.

Overall, I'm just gonna go ahead and give the book 5 stars. I had fun reading it. I would recommend it to people who're looking for a short, fun, story. I could see people enjoying reading it as a group and having a discussion about it. It raises some nice discussion questions (i.e. Is it moral to read people's emotions?). There were some plot twists in here that were quite satisfying. I was also satisfied with the ending.

There were of course some things that I would have liked to see. Because the author chose to have the story be so short and efficient, that means that we're missing out on a lot of development. As an example, it would have been nice to see Tal's invention used by others. One of the themes in the story is that it might not be ethical to read people's emotions, but the reader doesn't really get to see the invention get abused. We don't really get to see how it might change society for the negative. "The Man with the Ice Cream" instead chooses a faster pace, sacrificing that possible development for the bigger picture.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent scifi novella October 9, 2012
By John
This is a scifi novella in the old style --- with touches of cyberpunk and the old-school near-space scifi. Anyone who is a fan of those will find this story very satisfying.

4.0 out of 5 stars Intriguing, well-written, and insightful. August 3, 2014

This is an interesting, thought-provoking novella. I'm not typically a fan of sci-fi, but I found The Man with the Ice Cream to have just the right amount of technical information and background to give the story depth, but not so much that it buried me in details and made me feel like I was going to be tested at the end.

Overall, the story moves along at a nice pace and the characters are interesting. There is plenty of intrigue and a great, emotional, and interesting relationship between the two main characters. The ending took me by surprise which was very refreshing. I look forward to seeing what Mr. Bullard does in the future.

This was a good novella and worth the 2.99 price, I liked the cyberpunk and good plot. You will like it if you are a scifi person.

4.0 out of 5 stars Brief yet great October 1, 2014

Short, interesting, different. Written well enough to hold my interest. And I've even thought about it after having finished it! That's about all one can ask from a free ebook short story, right?
