Editorial Reviews

Here are the virile, invigorating Hollywood Western tales of screen icon Lorne Greene. Recorded in the mid-1960s, at the height of his Bonanza fame, you'll hear a brew of tradition, lounge-pop affectation and spaghetti western mania. Witness the tense fuzz-tone of Pop Goes The Hammer, the chilling conclusion of The Search or the haunting, philosophical I'm A Gun. Bold arrangements by Joe Reisman and Anita Kerr. Remastered from the original RCA Victor master tapes with rare photos, a candid interview with Lorne himself and original liner notes this deluxe collector's edition presents his finest LP with a generous clutch of extra tracks including the number one smash hit Ringo"" Original LP + 16 extra tracks, 28 tracks total.

This is definitely one of Lorne Greene's best albums (originally released in 1965 on RCA) and this CD does contain that album and additional bonus tracks. However, a huge majority of the bonus tracks come from his 1966 "Portrait of The West" album, in fact 8 of the 12 tracks from that album are on this CD in the original playing order (these 2 albums are on the 3rd disc of the Bonanza: Ponderosa Party Time boxed set on Bear Family in their entirety in the original playing order), and the rest of the bonus tracks are An Ol' Tin Cup (And A Battered Ol' Coffee Pot), Endless Prairie, Sand, and the #1 hit "Ringo" all from 1964's "Welcome To The Ponderosa") plus Five Card Stud, Cool Water, The Devil's Grin, and Gold, all from 1965's "Lorne Greene's American West." ("Welcome To The Ponderosa" and "Lorne Greene's American West" are combined on the 2nd disc of the boxed set in their entirety). If you can't afford the boxed set, this CD is a must have, otherwise, I would rather have you buy the boxed set than this CD.

I was looking for an album with the song "Ringo" because it brought back good memories and found this album with lots of songs I remember from a long time ago. Love the album and glad I found it.

Excellent Album. Love the songs and commentary. I wish they would redo on CD the Album "Welcome to the Ponderosa" Just as it was done back in the 60's. This Album has some of them with a few I had not heard before. Loved them all and miss the one's left out from "Welcome to the Ponderosa" I have had the Vinyl for almost 50 years and it just does not play well anymore. Need a CD version with a reasonable price to get the missing songs. Just a great CD especially when on the road.

I have been a fan of Lorne Greene as far back as I can remember - his CD, "The Man" is outstanding, especially song selection #11, "Darling my Darling."

I have heard Lorne Greene sing his songs before, but this is an excellant recording of his abilities. It will certainly help me remember him and have good song to boot!

What can be said about this album that hasn't been said already? Henry Mancini's liner notes tell you all you need to know: "I like this album! It's a steel-drivin', mountain-movin' album full of exciting hammer-swingin', rock-splittin' rhythms. Everybody knows Lorne Greene. Sure...he's the Big Boss of the Ponderosa Ranch on TV's "Bonanza," but that's NOT the Lorne Greene I'm talking about. In this album he takes off his shirt and bends these great work songs in his bare hands like some kind of way-out giant. In every groove there's pure, naked virility that will give your loudspeaker a real traumatic shock. There's bone, muscle and guts in these songs...."

Yup.
