Editorial Reviews

Product Description

When I first picked up my father s old bowl-back mandolin, around the age of three, little did I know that I was committing myself to a lifelong odyssey with the instrument. So begins Peter Ostroushko in his notes to this epic and wide-ranging album of tunes and compositions gleaned from history celebrating the illustrious mandolin.

An acclaimed virtuoso fluent in all genres of the repertoire, his stunning performances here on mandolins, mandola, mandocello and bazouki glide effortlessly through old-time folk and bluegrass, classic American parlor standards, Swing Era jazz, Bach, Beethoven & Vivaldi, New and Old World tunes (Brazil, Ireland, France, Italy, Ukraine, et al.) and great original Ostroushko compositions.

Review

Having been a long time fan of Peter Ostroushko as well as being completely obsessed with all kinds of mandolin music, I was chomping at the bit when I ordered this CD.
The "proof in the pudding" was when I played the 2nd disc -when the first tune- a lively Ukrainian piece - started playing my 6 year old daughter immediately jumped up from her Saturday morning T.V shows and started lilting and cutting some impressive capers around the living room - now that is powerful stuff!
Ostrouko's rendition of Ellington's "in a sentimental mood" has got to be my favorite version of that tune. Other Gems include some tasty ragtime Joplinesque pieces, swinging duets with the great fiddler Johnny Gimble ( on electric mandola) , and a return of the sorely missed "Rising Fawn String Ensemble" with Norman and Nancy Blake. Butch Thompson, Dean McGraw, Rich Dworsky and other Prairie Home Companion familiars add to the stellar supporting cast.,
. After meandering through Americana and a whirl wind tour of Eastern Europe Peter shows his prowess on some well known and some less well known Classical pieces.
for Mando heads the booklet has pictures and info on the instruments being used, and the recordings themselves demonstrate many different styles on many different instruments including the lesser heard mandola and mandocello.
as the man himself says - this is "music for the soul in a weary world"
after listening to this on my drive back and forth to work for the last few weeks - I can honestly say my soul feels a whole lot better.

Highly recommended!

This collection of mandolin music displays not only the artist's versatility, but also the wide variety of the mandolin's historic catalog. Today the mandolin is mostly heard in bluegrass music and traditional American music. The classical and foreign music in this collection show that musicians have valued the mando's unique sound for many years and in many cultures. This is a very enjoyable collection of music.

I am a beginner mandolinist/student trying to fill out a library of various styles and artists, and this is one I would keep if I had to get rid or the others. Mr. Ostroushko is a wonderfully talented artist, and his music is "playable." Disc one is Americana, disc two is other-world music from Europe and South America, and disc three is mostly varied classical pieces. Unfortunately I left the set in a rental car while on a recent trip and lost it, but I'm ordering another ASAP! I hope whoever next rents the car appreciates good music.

Peter Ostroushko is without question a virtuoso of the mandolin and a master of many of its modes: folk, bluegrass, classical, and ethnic. This album represents that mastery, and I salute him heartily for it. It offers traditional American folk music, some bluegrass classics, a nice selection of European folk music, and some classical and South American selections.

While Mr. Ostroushko is a consummate musician, you probably won't buy this album if you aren't already an acoustic music enthusiast, as it indeed presents a lot of plinky-plinky, which, I've learned, a lot of people won't tolerate. I'm fine with that, so the rest of this is for initiates.

Ostroushko's performances of American and European folk tunes are grounded in the essential spirit of those tunes, and here's where the soloist is at his best. His technique and phrasing are impeccable and they set a high standard for those who play this instrument. That said, many tunes rely on studio magic -- i.e., he plays all four instruments in some quartets and plays regular duets with himself. While there's nothing intrinsically wrong with that, we should allow that it is not an authentic acoustic music experience.

My only difficulty with the album is with its classical part. I've heard all of the classical selections -- Vivaldi, Bach, Beethoven, Paganini -- played far better by other performers. While Mr. Ostroushko plays with technical accuracy (although there is some obvious fret-damping in his performance of Bach and Paganini), his performances lack the energy and phrasing I've heard from those more steeped in the classical genre (for instance, Avi Avital).

If you play the mandolin -- whether as a folk/bluegrass parlor picker or a gypsy/jazz fusion enthusiast -- you should own and study this album. Listen to a master at work.

This guy is all over the place here and can handle pretty much any genre of music. If you like the mandolin and are tired of just hearing guys play Bluegrass on it, check this out.

I enjoyed learning more about Ostroushko from the liner notes after only hearing him on A Prarie Home Companion. The quality of the music is great and the variety of music is great. I really enjoy it.
