surprisingly tasty,

I bought this book as a 'gag gift' for my wife, a New England native who LOVES maple syrup. Turns out it is a really wonderful cookbook about "cooking" with maple syrup (anybody can pour it on stuff). If you use grade B maple syrup (much darker, with a very strong maple flavor) you don't even need to use much. This book made a maple syrup lover out of me!

Changed my breakfast life!,

This book changed my life, at least the breakfast part of my life. After trying a few recipes, I haven't used pancake/waffle mix since, nor have I bought boxed cereal. Now I make pancakes, waffles, granola and muffins from scratch. The desserts are great too. And I love reading his antedotes about each recipe, it is the first cookbook I read cover to cover.

I've made 75% of these recipes and love all of them! I bought this to go with each quart of our homemade maple syrup that we gave away at Christmas, everyone loved it!

When you make your own maple syrup you need a way other than pancakes to use your syrup. This is it, recipes galore. Some are very good. Try it you'll like it.

Great recipes,
This review is from: Maple Syrup Cookbook: 100 Recipes for Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner (Paperback)
This is a sweet little cookbook with lots of recipes using maple syrup. The cookbook is part of a gift basket I'm making with maple syrup products and other breakfast-type items. It fits perfectly. I tried the Sticky Bun recipe and they were tasty and easy to make but I haven't tried any of the others yet.

This is a lovely little cookbook which we've used quite often. As you can see in the table of contents, there are 4 chapters: maple syrup production and grading, breakfast recipes, lunch and dinner recipes, and desserts. The first chapter inspired us to tap our own sugar maple trees (a lot of background info is provided, but you will probably want to consult a how-to book specifically about maple sugaring if you decide to try it). We did this for several consecutive years and it was a nice activity for our 2 kids. They learned something about where food comes from, all the time and energy that goes into maple syrup production, and, therefore, why we should never wast a drop! The breakfast and dessert recipes are the best. We love to make the incredibly delicious sticky buns (an easy but scrumptious version made with baking powder instead of yeast). This has become a family favorite for special occasion breakfasts. The maple oat walnut muffins are outstanding. The granola recipe is excellent. The maple fudge is very good. The maple apple pie is a nice variation of an old favorite. My daughter made the maple sugar candy using little maple leaf molds, presented it in a crystal bowl, gave an oral presentation on how to make the candy, and won best of show at a 4H fair. The baked beans recipe was the springboard to my developing my own version of an old standard. This is one book I will never discard. Too many fond memories of my kids helping with the sugaring and using the syrup for recipes in this book. Just writing this review, I am choking back tears. |
