Editorial Reviews

Pity Marc Pease: it's 10 years since high school, and he's still chasing the dream. He believes in the possibilities for his a cappella octet (which is now down to four people), and he still craves the approval of his old drama teacher, Mr. Gribble, one of those tinhorn potentates who swagger cluelessly through their little kingdoms. Marc is haunted by his onstage meltdown during his senior-year production of The Wiz, and Mr. Gribble remembers it, too--maybe that's why he steers clear of his former protégé. These are the ingredients of The Marc Pease Experience, a sour-patch comedy that hands a welcome lead role to Jason Schwartzman as Marc (conjuring up images of his Rushmore character 10 years after graduation, perhaps) and provides Ben Stiller with a deliciously rotten character part in Mr. Gribble. All the action unfolds in the course of a single day, the opening of the new Gribble revival of The Wiz, in which Marc's girlfriend Meg (Anna Kendrick) has a small role. This impending train wreck affords some funny moments, and credit director Todd Louiso and screenwriter Jacob Koskoff with adding a layer of Election-style acid to the project, especially where Meg is concerned. But while Schwartzman is more than capable (the performances of the "Meridian 8"--Marc refuses to change the name of his group, despite the losses in personnel--are especially amusing) and Stiller is wicked, the movie doesn't fully follow through with its convictions, and goes completely soft toward the end. --Robert Horton

3.0 out of 5 stars Not that good, definitely not a comedy, November 8, 2009
This review is from: The Marc Pease Experience (DVD)
I suppose what will make or break this film is expectations. If you are expecting a Ben Stiller comedy - skip it. If you are expecting a Jason Schwartzman dating-the-older-gal (Rushmore - Criterion Collection) fun/obscure title - skip it. If on the other hand you are in the mood for boring rants and lectures on coordinating a high school musical play - then this is your movie. Seriously.

This film follows a 25 year old Marc Pease (Schwartzman) as he navigates his life of driving a limo, running a 4-person singing group (called the something 8's) and dating his high school senior girlfriend. Ben Stiller plays the school admin that teaches drama and singing at the same school Pease attended and his girlfriend (Jessica from Twilight (Two-Disc Special Edition)) is at now. Over this 80 minutes we are subjected to Stiller giving person-by-person analysis of how his class rehearsals are going - 3 different times. I know some people like his long dissertations in film while trying to be witty and such, but it really falls flat and boring here. They throw in some inappropriate relationship stuff between Stiller and a young student followed by a whole series of unlikely and uncomfortable situations with Schwartzman's awkwardness of trying to become an actual adult.

The picture and sound quality are fine and there are no real extras. The cover art is unappealing as there isn't any, so I give three stars for the performances (which in themselves are good) and film quality, but there is nothing here to recommend except to maybe those putting on their own singing plays in high school.

1.0 out of 5 stars too much politically correct, April 3, 2011
This review is from: The Marc Pease Experience (DVD)
This movie was so politically correct to become boring and annoying. There is also a fat Alice in wonderland, I am wondering what message were they meaning to send: "Fat is beautiful so eat a lot and be unhealthy everyone"...
