5.0 out of 5 stars "The Marked Son" Fae And Romance Done Boy Style December 7, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
"The Marked Son" takes the Fae/Human dynamic in a new and original direction.
Nothing about this book fits the mold of the cookie cutter stories involving fae that seem to have overrun YA to this point.

Cases In Point

Dylan
Dylan Kennedy is a wounded soul, living with an emotionally distant mother who is searching for love in all the wrong places. He has no idea what to expect when his mother takes him to a sheep ranch in Oregon and and abandons him to grandparents that he never knew existed. Couple this with his seeing the "girl of his dreams" in the woods behind his house, and a strange new allergy to iron and you will soon find yourself on the road to story nirvana.
Dylan is a good guy with a little darkness around the edges. He is flawed, but not in a way that drives people away from him. It is his need for love and acceptance that drives him to the friends and romance that he finds in this tale.

Kera
Kera lives in the world of Fae, and she is in trouble. Her land is being stripped of its people by a tyrannical leader who is bent on racial purity. He has embarked on a campaign of murder, killed all those he deems to be "half-breeds".
As if this is not enough to deal with Kera also finds herself drawn to cross the veil into the human world. Drawn to the dangers of possible discovery. Drawn to Dylan.

The Story
This story is one that captures both your heart and imagination from its opening pages. It manages to combine the real life issues of absentee parenting, insecurity, emotional development, and self acceptance in the role of Dylan; with the damsel in distress flight and fantasy that Kera and her world offer.

5.0 out of 5 stars WOW! LOVE THIS BOOK! August 3, 2011
Format:Paperback
WOW! I finished The Marked Son thirty minutes ago and my heart is still racing. This book is amazing. It's like I took off on the most fantastic paranormal fantasy adventure ride, and still haven't touched ground.

The storyline and plot just don't quit. It keeps taking you higher and higher, and just when you think you've reached the top, Shea Berkley gives you another awesome shot of adrenaline. Shea Berkley has definitely got an imagination overload going in this story. The Marked Son had me laughing, crying, angry, heartbroken, and my favorite, swooning :)

Dylan is one hundred percent blow-your-mind awesome guy material. Dylan had my heart breaking for him when his mom abandoned him, and his mess-up life. But now that he founded Kera, the girl of his dreams, who's shown Dylan who and what he really is, there is no sacrifice Dylan won't make to love and protect her in order to be with her. Kera is from Teag--another dimension--and she's a head-strong, self-assured girl. And when she sees Dylan, she knows he's her forever love and white knight. Dylan's two best buds, Leo and Jason, are right by Dylan's side on this wild, magical adventure. Jason is a wild card, he had me in hysterics with his witting mouth and take on the world. Leo is laid back, easy going kind of guy, but he's smarter than he seems, and when he meets Lucinda, I laughed so hard I cried. Shea Berkley did a jam-up job describing a guy like Leo in this kind of predicament. I could just see poor Leo wanting to find a rock to crawl under. I love both these guys. They're funny, terrific , beautiful, and this thing Leo has going on with scary, sensual, sadistic Lucinda, I can't wait to see more of them!

I wish I was as brilliant and talented a writer like Shea Berkley in order to write this review.

4.0 out of 5 stars An Entertaining Read! February 20, 2012
Format:Paperback
The guy on this cover is so good looking. He makes wearing a hoodie look dang good. He's the perfect Dylan, he really is. Besides the goregous guy on the cover and the description, you know what else made me want to buy this book? It's from Entangled Publishing. I have liked every single book I've read from them thus far, it's definitely a selling point with me. I'm a huge fan of this publishing company and their books. That being said, let's get to it...

Poor Dylan is only seventeen years old and gone through so much in his young life. His relationship with his mother is horrible and strained; it doesn't help that she abandons him with his grandparents he's never met before. You can't help but let your heart break with his, which actually surprised me. Not that my heart broke but that his did. He has this tough exterior and you don't suspect he really cares for his mom, but his actions tell you differently. So, not only does he get abandoned by the only family he knew, he also finds out why he's always felt so different from everyone else and why people seem to forget about him so easily.

We meet Kera, a girl that Dylan has been seeing in his dreams since he was a young child but things change when he see's her in his grandparents backyard. Though, she doesn't look real - she looks more like a ghost. So this begs the question . . . is she real or not?

I have to say, I think this is the best `from a guys POV' type book that I've seen. I don't mean the whole story, per say, but I mean actually making it extremely realistic. Like we're actually inside a guy's head. I find it's very difficult for a lot of female author's to manage this. Maybe it's because we're assuming and guessing what a guy might do or say...

More About the Author

Shea Berkley started out writing nonfiction (not so fun) and quickly moved into fiction (totally fun), and knew she'd found her calling. (Her family was thrilled she'd found friends to play with even if they weren't technically real.) She's still pleasantly surprised people are willing to pay to read her stories. Besides writing, her many diversions include kickboxing, reading awesome books and hanging out with her loud and rambunctious family. With five kids (all girls), her biggest job is to make sure the little darlings don't harass the neighbors and then play dumb when the cops come knocking on her door.
