Book Description

TRANSMISSION BURST 1

When the apocalypse came, it wasn't like anyone expected. There wasn't a nuclear holocaust, or zombies, or World War 3. There was only a well-intentioned experiment to unlock the human mind. The experiment worked, and people got what they wanted: psionic powers. But they soon found out that some things weren't meant to be discovered.

Dez Marlowe has been traveling the Wastes alone for longer than he can remember, fighting wild, blood-thirsty Scavengers and avoiding empath hunters. Like everyone else, he's just trying to survive as best he can in a chaotic and lawless world. Tired of aimless wandering, Dez gains entrance to Detroit, now a walled city ruled by the iron-fisted dictator Terrence McHale. Instead of peace, however, Dez only finds more trouble in the form of a lovely girl who just happens to be Terrence McHale's only daughter. She's run away, and Dez finds himself volunteering to go get her.

Finding her proves to be the easy part.

Novella: approx. 40,000 words.

Reading Order:
Burst 1: Scavenger's War
Burst 2: Phoenix
Burst 3: Flight (coming October 2012)

The first time he finished a book and said, "Huh, I bet I could write a better book than this," was when he knew he wanted to be a writer. 4.0 out of 5 stars Really Like This One June 19, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
I seem to have been on an end-of-the-world or post-apocalyptic reading kick lately, and this novella was my latest read along those lines - let's just say I'm ready for the sequel, right now: this is a good one.

The author does a good job of getting you into the head of the main character, and the futuristic scenes with the author's version of reality are believable with one or two exceptions, and the dialogue is crisp and to the point vs. rambling on for word count sake. With the volume of books I read on a monthly basis, I can forget what I read just yesterday but with this one I found myself thinking about it several hours after the fact with my own Walter Mitty type of moment - what I wish I could do today with some of the predicted technology of the future.

The story does end rather abruptly (for me at least), with the next episode with the coming sequel. So, when can I expect it? This one was a little hard to put down.

I picked this up for free during a Kindle promotion, and as I type this review the book is still free vs. the normal pricing of $2.99. If you enjoy sci-fi / post-apocalyptic stories, I would highly recommend this one even if it goes back to its $2.99 pricing as you will certainly get more than $2.99 of entertainment value!

5.0 out of 5 stars The Human Brain is a Scary Thing June 15, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
Asimov, Niven, Hoyle, and now Jack Sheppard! In his debut book "The Marlowe Transmissions: Scavenger's War" Jack Sheppard proves that he is going to be a force to be reckoned with in the Sci-Fi community. There are many post apocolyptic books out there, but Sheppard brings a fresh new voice to this genre.
Science has been trying to unlock the secrets and potential of the human brain for years, but what if there is a reason that we only use approximately 30 percent of it. What if we could unlock the other 70 percent? Would we make the world a better place, would we use our new found talents for the good of mankind, or would end up destroying the world as we now know it? What if a new "species" of humans evolved. This book is a wonderful journey into the future of the world and the people who are trying to survive it.
Hard core Sci-Fi fans will find this a refreshing quick read. As for those readers who have never tried Sci-Fi before, I feel that this is a good book to begin with. It is not bogged down with tons of technical jargon on every page that most people would not understand. It is written in an understandable manner that will grab you in the first few pages. You will not want to put it down. The only bad thing I have to say is now I have to wait for the next book to come out.

5.0 out of 5 stars Really Geeked about this New Series! June 15, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
Folks, this is fresh, exciting and very enjoyable Sci-fi. Even if you are not a Sci-fi devotee, you will like this. The story is creative and engaging, the New York, Detroit, Chicago setting real and believable and the action heart-pounding. I especially like the creative blending of tech, warfare and romance. And all of that centers around great characters that you will come to care about. Just wait until you meet Dez Marlowe! I'm not sure how the author managed to create the feel of a full size novel within a novella size book but he did. I eagerly await the next in the series.
