Book Description

What is more a symbol of the joys of marital intimacy than the bed shared by a loving married couple? It is often the delight of the godly wife to carefully dress the bed with lovely coverings and prepare it for an evening of rest with her husband. Throughout the day it may serve as a picture of comfort, refuge, and a reminder of the secret place enjoyed by husband and wife in times of mutual erotic expression. There are pleasant memories associated with the bed, that sometimes serve to stir God-given desires throughout the day. The marriage bed of Hebrews 13:4 refers to the intimate sexual relationship that is to thrive between a husband and a wife. The design of this book is to help you see the marriage bed as a gift from God to be used for his glory in expressions of pure delight. The husband and wife are to enjoy one another's body in such a way that the lavish love of Christ is displayed. This book gives a biblical portrait of intimacy in marriage. Included is a seven day study guide to help you cultivate intimacy in your marriage.

4.0 out of 5 stars Short but Encouraging October 11, 2012

Maybe it was because I read this on Kindle that it seemed too short, but I was wanting it to be longer and was done with it before I knew it. I love how the author constantly refers to the Gospel throughout this book. Everything must relate back to the Good News of Jesus Christ and marriage is certainly no exception. Great application of the Gospel to things like our own sinful past, sins of others against us, struggles with pain, lack of attraction to your spouse and overall commitment to consistent intimacy in marriage.

I really like the map for cultivating intimacy in 7 days. It stood out from other 'plans' I've read in other books because this plan is heavy on Scripture reading, study and prayer with your spouse, instead of rushing to the physical aspects of intimacy cultivatoin. I'd recommend this book to anyone, both newlywed and those who have been married for decades. Marriage is one of the many battlegrounds and we have never arrived at perfect intimacy. We must always be vigilant to cultivate connectedness and fight for greater oneness in marriage and the family.

3.0 out of 5 stars this might not be the book for you if.... October 7, 2012

I got this book on the recommendation of Tim Challies on his blog. At 99 cents, I thought I couldn't lose. I have always had a heart for marriages and am always on the lookout for books to improve myself and my marriage. This book had a few gems in it (I did highlight four times), but for the most part, it was not as helpful or encouraging as I would have hoped it would be.

Why it was not helpful to me (and might not be to you):
1) A major part of this book deals with issues that might be keeping the married couple from truly enjoying themselves fully in the marriage bed. If you are having physical, mental, or spiritual issues preventing you from enjoying the marriage bed or your spouse, he gives a few hints and then, at the back of the book, has suggestions of other books that might be helpful. If you are woman, and not dealing with these issues from divorce, I highly encourage you to read Intimate Issues by Linda Dillow and skip this book as this book will not help you, only suggest the need for help and then direct you to another book or counseling. And the book I suggest, as a woman, was not mentioned in his book.

2) The seven day plan is for both you and your husband to do together and includes both of you reading this book. Honestly, there should have been something stating this. My husband is not a reader, and when he does read, this isn't the kind of stuff he reads. While I do know there is great benefit to doing something like this together, the fact of the matter is my husband would not enjoy it. He would do it should I ask him, but I can see most husbands out there not wanting to do this either. I want a seven day plan for things **I** can do as a wife to help cultivate intimacy in the marriage. Change starts with me.

3) Honestly, because I have done a lot of reading on marriage , this book had very little new information to me. I do like the way he worded things (sometimes we just need to hear the same idea worded in a different way to have it finally click or make sense), but there were so few gems in the book, I am not sure I would have paid more than I did for it.

The writer is a good writer, makes some very good and valid points, and I am thankful I read it. But based on the title of this book, and the recommendation from Tim Challies, I guess I just expected more.

5.0 out of 5 stars Really fantastic booklet September 27, 2012
I have had the pleasure of knowing and learning from the author for several years. His approach to helping marriages and families is what makes him a popular speaker all around the country.

What I really appreciate about this book (and his Visionary Marriage book)is how practical it is. He is able to squeeze a ton of content into very little space and wraps it up with a generous amount of application. It is targeted to one main area of marriage and helps both husband and wife work together to understand the goals and blessings here and apply it immediately.

There is certainly a great place for marriage books like "This Momentary Marriage", "When Sinners Say I Do", "What Did You Expect" and "The Meaning of Marriage". They are terrific books and very helpful, but booklets like these stand out for different reasons.
