Book Description

Marriage is hard work, but worth it.
The challenge is to stop trying to avoid the frustration, pain and discouragement of marriage. Too often we focus on how to not be a bad spouse, how to not hurt feelings, how to not get in trouble. But then our focus is entirely on what NOT to do.
Instead, shift your focus. Look at what you want to do, embrace the joy, encouragement and challenge of marriage. This book offers one conversation a week, for an entire year, to help you move toward a better marriage. You can’t change everything about your marriage overnight, but, working a bit at a time, you can improve your marriage.
One hour a week for a conversation with your spouse can change your marriage from what not to do, into what you’ve always wanted. It won’t be easy, but it will be worth it.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"I read the entire book on my Kindle in two days (remember, I am a therapist who reads these books to review them and consier them for recommendation) between other work and errands. The book is easy to read without being overly simplistic. The subject matter is relevant to all marriages and all stages. This book is likely to make it into the rotation of books I use in my own marriage and will join a selection of books I use as homework with couples I counsel."

5.0 out of 5 stars Take up this challenge! January 24, 2012
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
As a Marriage and Family Therapist, I would recommend this book to a couple who is ready to improve their marriage. The commitment is one hour/one topic a week talking about a wide range of issues that couples often neglect to discuss. While the authors bring in their own experiences and suggestions to improve your marriage, they also focus on you finding out what works best in your relationship. It's a great format--the authors have come up with the topics and the questions, and all you need to do is carve out an hour a week to talk about your marriage and listen to each other.

The real challenge put forth in this book, from my point of view, is to have conversations with each other where the goal is to understand each other and work together on the marriage. If couples will use this book to help them do that, it's hard to see how they couldn't benefit tremendously.

4.0 out of 5 stars A great excuse to spend time improving your marriage February 10, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
I'll confess to being one of those people who doesn't relish marriage improvement books. It's not that I don't want or need a better marriage, but somehow I'm resistant to wanting to read marriage books with my wife. The Woods have done an outstanding job making a tool like this workable for me. The weekly readings are short and focus on the part I do enjoy: checking in with my wife and talking about ways we can do things better. Their topics for each weekly discussion range widely and have some excellent fuel for discussion. No cheesiness, no pie in the sky stuff, no psychobabble--just sound advice and good discussion starters. Highly recommended as an excuse to make time for your marriage. Good stuff!

5.0 out of 5 stars a great tool for your marriage February 2, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
This is a great tool for married couples, whether newlyweds or long time couples, to re-focus their marriage. I like that it's not just a "what you should do..." or "you're not doing..." book but rather a workbook. It's interactive and really gets you to communicate with your spouse. And for the price, you can't beat it.
