As teens, Cara Cavarlho and Devin Michaels spent one Summer together during a hard time in Devin's life. They became the best of friends. During her eighteenth birthday party, they snuck off to the beach together with drinks and simply enjoyed some time together. Devin gave her a birthday card and wrote that if they were both still single at age thirty-five, he would marry her. It was an innocent act of friendship.
A couple of weeks before her thirty-fifth birthday, Cara was helping clean out her parents' attic. Her parents were moving to Florida. Her mother, Ruthie, found the card and called Devin. She had decided Devin was perfect for Cara. Besides, if she did not help Cara marry Devin, there may never be any grandchildren. Or worse, Roger might marry Cara. Ruthie could not let that happen!
Devin was one of the best criminal lawyers in Manhattan. When Ruthie called, it was the excuse he needed for some much needed time off. He had had Cara on his mind often lately and Ruthie's call was like Fate knocking.
As the two spent time together (with Roger down too for a few days), the two do some serious soul searching about their jobs, their lives, and what their hearts truly wish for.
**** A wonderful romance where a couple get a second chance at happiness. This story is never boring, yet it is very heart warming as well. ****

It's often been said that friendship can be forever. For Cara Carvalho and Devin Michaels, it surely felt like that from the moment they met on a beautiful summer day so long ago. They were the best of friends and did everything together until the moment Devin's father died and everything changed.

Throughout the years, the pair have gone their separate ways. Both have achieved their dreams and have been reaping the rewards of their successes. Yet their lives are as different as night and day. Devin is now a successful lawyer while Cara owns her own shop in the posh Back Bay area in Boston as a successful home interior's expert.

When Cara's parents decide they'd like to move down to Florida, she finds herself agreeing to help her mother pack up the entire house in preparation for them to sell it. Immersed in a world full of past memories, she comes across a card Devin sent her years ago with a promise he'd made in regards to marrying her if she was still single at the age of thirty-five. The card's appearance brings back memories Cara had locked away for so long, memories she now finds herself yearning for.

Her mother, being the crafty person that she is, sees the card as an opportunity to reunite the pair in hopes of making them see just how perfect they are for one another. When Devin shows up on her doorstep, Cara begins to suspect her mother of blatant match-making. Yet deep inside she can't deny the feelings she still harbors for him, feelings Devin himself seems to reciprocate.

Unfortunately, Cara isn't at liberty to give in to what she feels for him. Her boyfriend has joined her for the duration of her vacation and she finds herself caught in the middle of juggling his attentions and Devin's.

I really liked this book. A lot. It had a nice love triangle. I was completely obsessed with it. Cara and Devin's relationship was nicely built, as well as her relationship with Roger. Two thumbs up, definitly. You did a very good job with this one, Mondello! :)

Cara Carvarlho is heartbroken that her parents are selling the family home and moving to Florida. While going through boxes to sort items for a yard sale, Cara's mother, Ruth, discovers a seventeen year old birthday card to Cara. Penned on the back is a marriage contract of sorts, signed by Devin Michaels: If neither one is married by the age of thirty-five, they will marry each other. Cara is filled with tender memories of that summer long ago.
Ruth is determined to bring the two back together, even though Cara is practically engaged to another man.
Devin Michaels has had enough of the dog-eat-dog world of criminal law. Burned out and experiencing a form of mid-life crisis, he leaps at the invititation from Ruth Carvalho to attend her daughter Cara's thirty-fifth birthday party. Little does he know the woman has much bigger plans for Devin and Cara.
Ms. Mondello creates a believable situation peopled with charming characters, natural dialogue and humor. Sensual tension between Devin and Cara heats up the pages while Roger, Cara's partner, is oblivious in a humorous way.
I highly recommend THE MARRIAGE CONTRACT for a delightful, heartwarming and light-hearted read about two old friends discovering there is always a second chance for true love and happiness.
