I picked up this gem a couple of years ago at a comic shop and I loved this graphic novel from page 1. I saw the movie when i was a little kid and i pciked up this book, but there is a complete difference between the Stanley Ipkiss in the movie and the one in the comic. In the movie, The Mask (Stanley Ipkiss) doesnt kill people but in the book he is a homicidal maniac, . Even though the comic is violent, there is something comical about. He acts like a cartoon character and he says some funny things. If you ever wondered what it would be like if a Warner Bros. cartoon character existed in our world than read this.

I love the 1994 movie ''The Mask" starring Jim Carrey. The sequel "Son of the Mask'' starring Jamie Kennedy wasn't all that bad either. Once I read this original comic book that was by Dark Horse Comics I noticed some changes between this comic and both the movies. Unlike the movies The Mask was referred to as "Big Head", rather than "The Mask", Stanley Ipkiss, who in the movie was played by the comical & funny Jim Carrey was more geeky in the comic than the movie and has a girlfriend named Kathy whom kills him later in the comic who also briefly wears the mask. Lt. Kellaway later wears the mask as well while in the movie he never did wear the mask at all. Unlike the movies, the mask was a superhero in the movies depending on the wearer's personality, the mask would only as dangerous as the mask's wearer. In the comics, whether you are good or bad, the mask would become an antihero, insane, and extremely dangerous. I really enjoy this comic book, I like Stanley Ipkiss better in the movie than in the comics. Also The Mask is rated PG-13 & Son of the Mask is rated PG, The Mask Dark Horse comics would probably be rated R. The Mask I would give a 8/10, Son of the Mask I would give 6/10, and The Mask Dark Horse Comic I would give 5.5/10. Good comic book adaptation ! I would recommend letting your children watch The Mask & Son of the Mask when they are in their 13 years & up , and The Mask Dark Horse comic when they are 17 years & up. definitely suggested for MATURE READERS ONLY !

Yes as you know, this was later made into the Jim Carrey classic 1994 and yes, the film was toned down from the book. However I felt the screenwriters still respected where the comic was coming from.

Truly this is a work for the ages! A piece of art which succinctly summarizes the nineties in all of their glory with a wonderful throwback to classic cartoony comics. John Arcudi is a brilliant individual touched by the very gods themselves.

An excellent collection of the original comics for the Mask before he was called the Mask. Back when he was called Big Head. THough I would like to mention that this is violent... very violent so younger comic readers should stray away.
