Editorial Reviews

From the Back Cover

Put an easy-to-use arsenal of IC applications data right at your fingertips! Complete with new features that make it even easier to use than its predecessors, this third edition of a best-selling handbook provides extensive data on application circuits for today's most popular integrated circuits. It's an ideal companion volume to The Master IC Cookbook, Third Edition, and covers hundreds of currently available ICs. Similar applications for the same type of IC are guouped together for easy comparison, and the larger format of this edition makes the illustrations and text more readable. New circuits have been added, while obsolete and unavailable devices have been deleted to keep you up to date. Only ICs commercially available from major hobbyist suppliers at the time of publication have been included. Special attention is given to sub-families of the 74xx series, and a new section on analog/digital and digital/analog converters encompasses increasingly common hybrid devices that blend digital and linear circuitry. Sections organized conveniently by type of IC include coverage of: 4xxx digital circuits; operational amplifiers and comparators; oscillators and signal generators; audio amplifers; voltage regulators; RF and video devices; special-purpose digital and computer-related circuits. Combining comprehensiveness with easy access and readability, The Master Handbook of IC Circuit Applications, Third Edition will greatly expedite your IC expertise.

The publisher's description promised an "arsenal" of circuit applications, but you wouldn't want to go into battle armed only with this book. The print is big, so you don't get many circuits. Most of the circuits are useless, either because they are too simple, or there are no values on the components, or the components are valued but there are no formulas supplied to allow you to adapt the circuit to your uses (for example, most of the filter circuits are not supplied with their associated formulae), or the circuits are impractical (lots of circuits for creating one kind of gate out of other gates), or finally the circuits are of such complexity that you would never be using them as building blocks (eg, circuits for radios and tape recorders). Finally, there's little or no theory supplied with these circuits, so this book won't teach you enough to allow you to modify the few circuits it supplies.

I already knew this book and was buying a copy for a specific reason. To be honest, if I were buying it as a more general reference, I might have rated it lower. It has almost no explanations for the circuits provided and may circuit diagrams are incomplete. They show all of the components, but not all of the component values. If you can, try to get an advanced look at a library somewhere before you buy. Otherwise, you might not be happy with your purchase.
