Editorial Reviews

For his Savant Records' debut, tenor saxman JD Allen went back in the studio with colleagues Gregg August and Rudy Royston, both of whom have been his regular partners on the bandstand and in the studio since 2008. They go about their business with a robust and focused melodic articulation propelled by great rhythmic drive. You will not find this trio beating a dead horse into submission. The original tracks are short, they get in, make a statement, essay some variations, and get out--short and sweet and intense. An interesting, exciting and thought-provoking release from JD Allen and company.

JD Allen is a great saxo, wit a great sound. You can hear him in the last group of Jeremy Pelt, but hear is more intensive, more hard. The rest of the trio are greats musicians too, Gregg August play bass( lead bass chair in Brooklyn Philhamrmonic), Rudy Royston play drums. Is a very solid trio. The CD is like a suite about bullfight, but you can't find any cliche about spanish music or something similar. Is a real analysis about the matador and the bull. Is very introspective composition, without concessions. Bullfight is something very ritual and "real". Its not a game. is more essential and Allen capture very well this meanings. Anyway don't mind if you like, or can understand "la fiesta", the album is great, and the concept also. You can hear echoes of Coleman, Shorter or even Coltrane( don't forget that Coltrane have a album call "Ole") This CD is a serious opportunity to know a great saxophonist and also to know a little more about the interior meaning of bullfight

I like most of the tunes, skip past the ones that are a bit far out. I enjoyed his trio at the Detroit Jazz Fest 2013 and would like to see him live again.
