A TREACHEROUS QUEST...
When her friends become trapped in an ancient room supported by a fifteen hundred year old rope, archaeologist Gillian Bright knows their time is limited. The rope could break at any moment plummeting them to their deaths and she is the only one with the skills needed to save them.

AN ANCIENT RIDDLE.....
With the assistance of Adam Housner, an Australian school teacher, Gillian discovers that the trap is merely one component of a series of elaborate puzzles. Devised by a Mayan priest called Kinix to protect an ancient secret, Gillian and Adam must travel to various Mayan sites in an attempt to decipher his mysteries. What follows is a journey of terror, adventure and thrilling exploits as they race against time to discover the key to freeing her friends

A MALICIOUS ADVERSARY...
Arun Keane, the leader of a mysterious sect, is fuelled by a desperate desire for treasure. He’ll do anything necessary to extend his collection of riches and he desperately wants whatever Kinix is hiding. He uses his extensive network of assassins, numerous funds and illicit connections to try and stop Gillian and her team from getting it before he does.

The cover first caught my eye (yes, I am one of those...if the cover doesn't look worth my time, then I don't even bother reading the blurb) I enjoy adventure novels and there are far too few out there that are not reversions of the same old thing. I am happy to say that The Mayan Priest is not only something new and thrilling, it is written with an intelligence that many adventure novels lack.

A page turning adventure story, I fell into the journey from the get-go. It is fast paced, filled with intelligent characters and interesting situations that propel the reader at breakneck speed through a thrilling and satisfying story. The archeology is believable, the heroine smart and brave with a genuine "feel" about her. There is danger, twists and turns, some romance and the mystery of ancient civilizations. Far more intuitive than I expected, I was pleasantly surprised by the fluid writing style and the emotional connection I made with the characters. Unlike the usually plodding, pretentious tone of some author's(am I the only person in the country that thought The Da Vinci Code was the more boring, pretentious dribble ever written?), this story is actually FUN and intelligent.

As an adventure novel, it is one of the best I have read in years and was very difficult to put down when I needed to do something else...like eat or sleep. Ms. Guillou knows what she is doing and I hope she keeps doing it...soon please, soon!

Exciting read June 15, 2011

Wow, this is one fantastic book! As an avid reader of fantasy/adventure books, I have read so many now that I have come to see the same stories played out over and over again by different authors. Growing ever tired of the lack of original material coming out of the community I was thrilled to find something as fresh and exciting as Sue Guillou's 'The Mayan Priest'. The fact it was written by a new author is a real delight.

The characters are very well developed, with very organic feeling dialogue, again something unusual for the genre. Each scene flows easefully into the next, all the while driving you to turn the page to read the next exciting step of the characters fantastical, yet surprisingly 'fact driven' journeys. Sue has obviously done her research into the Mayan civilisation, and the level of realism it provides really adds to the intrigue.

The only problem I have with the book is that it I had so much fun reading it I had to consciously try to slow myself down to take in all the details!... Not a bad problem at all really :)

If the author continues writing books of this quality there is no doubt you'll come to know the name 'Sue Guillou' along with those of Dan Brown, Steve Berry etc...

confused September 5, 2011

I truly believe that the previous reviews were written by friends/family of the author. This book has no flow, and is not nearly descriptive enough for the scenes she is trying to set. The fact that she uses Aussie slang for American characters is VERY distracting. Also, someone should have proof-read the book, because a couple of times characters were confused-wrote Georgio but was really referring to Dale. NOT a 5 star book by any means!

I don't know who wrote the 5 star reviews - must have been friends & family. I over paid for this book at $.99. A few of the highlights:

I agree with the other one star reviews. I was written badly, not edited at all, and not worth the effort of reading.

More About the Author

Sue Guillou was born in 1970 in Melbourne, Australia. She spent much of her childhood travelling with her parents which helped increase her sense of adventure and fun. Her love of books also developed early and she was often caught reading 'Enit Blyton' under the blanket with a torch. Sue briefly ran her own business but currently works for a wonderful, corporate claims management company in Melbourne. Sue also spends her spare time with her children, husband and supporting her son's Go Karting hobby.

In a note for her readers Sue would like to thank everyone who has purchased a copy of her book. She has taken on board the advise to get the book re-edited by an American editor rather than an Australian and a new copy will be uploaded in around three weeks. The current one is suspended.

A new novel called The Iceman is on its way
