Editorial Reviews

Originally released in 1982, The Mekons Story (also known as It Falleth like the Gentle Rain from Heaven) is a collection of rare and unobtainable tracks from the U.K. punk legends which Jon Langford describes as "our revenge on the world". This 20 track CD includes brilliant outtakes, unreleased tracks, alternate versions, B-sides, as well as a handful of live radio sessions recorded between 1977 and 1982 during the first Mekons incarnation. With a drunken sounding David Spencer providing a between cuts "history" of the band, this, more than any other Mekons recording, shows their crucial and comic postpunk development. From cacophonic punk, primitive disco, agitated funk and new wave, and synth pop, the consistent thread in this material is the sheer brilliance of the Mekons' literacy in songwriting.

Biography

For about a year back in the 1970s the Mekons epitomized the risks,
extremes and ludicrous promise of punk rock. It was a different time
f’sure BUT eerily similar to NOW. For a while back THEN the Mekons were
indeed very interested in punk rock but it wore off (for reasons too
obvious & well documented to dwell on here). After the huge success of
their FAST PRODUCT 45s ... Read more in Amazon's The Mekons Store

Don't be confused by the title Amazon assigns, mystifyingly, to this "EP." It is not a reissue of the 1986 four-song vinyl EP, "Crime and Punishment" (three songs from which appear on the "Original Sin" compilation CD).

In actuality this CD is "It Falleth Like the Gentle Rain from Heaven - The Mekons Story," the CD reissue of the band's third LP from 1982. (The title picks up from that of their first LP, "The Quality of Mercy Is Not Strnen.") Apparently the only difference is the substitution of "Byron" (featuring Sally Timms) for the mistakenly included demo of same on the vinyl version.

This is vintage Mekons, displaying the range of their abilities, from hard-edged live tunes to dub-tinged studio treats. Some cuts have appeared in the same or different forms on 12"s/LPs/CDs before and since, but why not hear them in this particular context, strung together with David Spencer's apparently unrehearsed reading of a fanciful narration? The LP cover declared: "20 Great Songs/ Over 60 Minutes Playing Time!" -- actually 61:37, including narration -- so there's bound to be something here for every taste.

In addition to its sonic delights, this CD includes the LP's original essay by Lester Bangs, which also was reprinted in the still-available book "Mekons United" as well as on mekons.com.

I've had this album since about 1983 and it's still one of my favorites. I bought it after I heard "letter's in the Post" on John Peel and fell in love with the whole album instantly. When I've been feeling blue I've put this album on and it lifted me back up to the sun again.

The Mekons are not everyone's cup of tea but it you're lucky enough to "get it" you will love this album. No two songs are alike but they are all special.

The Mekons Story is a rare gem. It would be great if people started hearing about it so that it's genius spread. The Mekons, at least in the early years (I don't know too much of their later stuff) were just brilliant.
