"Diamond in the Rough" is a very well written song with a great melody. I remember this song since the early 80's and have recently rediscovered it to my elation! We sometimes relate a song to a time or era in our lives. This song is very dear to me because my marriage and my first child were new and I relate this song to them both. A true treasure.

In 1978 Nancy Honeytree released "Melodies In Me" on the Myrrh label [MSB-6591] that was just a little too far ahead of the curve for most Contemporary Christian listeners in that year. Departing from her early folk rock releases to open this album with a big band swing piece, "The Broadmoor Song", was a radical departure. Granted, 30 years later, it sounds great in older ears especially the way she moves from the biographical opening song into the light classical piece from Dvorak's "New World Symphony #5 (Largo)" and the vocal tag entitled, "Melody". Honeytree grew up surrounded by music and the second track gives honor to her parents for the classical influence in her music. "Up To The Mountains" is a catchy blue-grassy ballad that could have easily be an autobiographical piece. The forth track, "Making Melody In My Heart" sounds like it could have been written and sung by Carol King but Nancy's unmistakable tremolo shines through. "Bittersweet" and "Thief" are reminiscent of the styles and instrumentation arrangements heard on some Joni Mitchell releases of the late 70's. "His Majesty Reigns" evokes a feeling of a renascence period piece in 3/4 meter. It is simply a love song written between a girl and her love, Jesus, addressed to God the Father. "Mirage" is another flowing ballad with more complex music than her earlier folk ballads. "One Sweet Word" captures the unmistakable sound of the late 70's early 80's with the electric guitar licks and the brass section backup. Nancy's use of multi tracking her own voice adds a nice richness with some funky piano laying a solid back beat.Read more ›
